    Under the direction of a histotechnologists or histology lead the histology technician performs the various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. Duties include specimen receipt and accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, paraffin sectioning, H&E staining, and special staining. They assist a pathologist during intra-operative frozen sections, assist the physician or PA during bone marrow and thyroid procedures, makes the slides and prepares the slides for examination by the pathologist.

    Major Responsibilities:

    1. Responsible for accurately achieving and maintaining competency of histology techniques to include basic histology testing. This includes ensuring specimens are properly accessioned, labeled, and suitable for testing, fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, H & E staining, coverslipping, slide distribution and correlation, special staining, immunofluorescence and histology procedures demonstrated by the departmental skills roster.

    2. Recognizes the existence of procedural, instrumental, and technical problems and initiates corrective action to maintain accuracy and efficiency. Follows up with proper documentation and validation of all processes. Updates communication and follows through with appropriate staff, Lead Tech, or Clinical Manager.

    3. Plans, prioritizes, and is adaptable to changes in workload demands; works as a team to set daily goals to ensure excellent customer service with high quality histology laboratory test results in a safe, accurate and timely manner.

    4. Monitors quality control, quality assurance, and ensures results are within acceptable performance and accrediting agency standards. Evaluates, compares and interprets ambiguous and erroneous results and makes decisions on most appropriate corrective action to resolve technical problems or instrument problems. Follows up with proper documentation and validation of all processes where necessary. Updates communication and follows through with appropriate staff, Lead Tech, or Clinical Manager.

    5. Understands the flow of laboratory data and information via Laboratory Information System.

    6. Gains technical expertise related to new technologies, often through independent study.

    7. Maintains and cleans equipment and instruments.

    8. Follows regulatory guidelines to safely and properly prepare and store chemicals, reagents, and solutions.

    9. Assists providers with bone marrow and thyroid collections, makes and stain slides preparing them for examination by the pathologist.

    10. Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.

    11. Meets acceptable turnaround time and productivity standards for the department.

    12. Strives to maintain a positive work environment and demonstrates interpersonal skills required to successfully perform as a team member in a fast-paced environment.

    Education and Learning:

    REQUIRED

    Associate degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry

    A copy of the applicant's/employee's transcript as confirmation of the education requirement must be provided at time of hire.

    Work Experience:

    REQUIRED

    1 year of healthcare, laboratory or research experience

    License and Certifications:

    REQUIRED

    American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification within 2 years of hire
