    Description

    Job Title: Phlebotomist

    Job Summary: The phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients safely, accurately, and efficiently. They must maintain a high standard of patient care while following established protocols and safety procedures. The role requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

    Responsibilities:

    1. Greet patients and explain the blood collection process in a clear and reassuring manner.
    2. Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling of blood samples to prevent errors.
    3. Select appropriate venipuncture sites and perform blood draws using various techniques (e.g., venipuncture, finger sticks).
    4. Monitor patients for adverse reactions during and after blood collection and provide appropriate care if needed.
    5. Follow established protocols for specimen handling, processing, and transportation to the laboratory.
    6. Maintain accurate records of blood collections, including patient information, test orders, and specimen tracking.
    7. Adhere to infection control and safety guidelines to minimize the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
    8. Assist in maintaining a clean and organized work environment, including sanitizing equipment and disposing of biohazardous waste.
    9. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as nurses and laboratory technicians, to ensure coordinated patient care.
    10. Participate in continuing education and training to stay updated on best practices and new developments in phlebotomy techniques and technology.

    Qualifications:

    1. High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred.
    2. Certification or licensure as a phlebotomist (e.g., Certified Phlebotomy Technician) may be required in some states or healthcare settings.
    3. Prior experience in phlebotomy or healthcare-related field is desirable but not always necessary for entry-level positions.
    4. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with patients, coworkers, and other healthcare professionals.
    5. Proficiency in basic medical terminology and knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to phlebotomy procedures.
    6. Ability to follow instructions, multitask, and work efficiently under pressure in a dynamic healthcare environment.
    7. Willingness to adhere to safety protocols and maintain confidentiality of patient information.
    8. Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks, such as bending, reaching, and grasping.
    • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination necessary for handling needles and other phlebotomy equipment.
    • Lift and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment and supplies.
    • Ability to work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and mobile blood donation units.
