- Greet patients and explain the blood collection process in a clear and reassuring manner.
- Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling of blood samples to prevent errors.
- Select appropriate venipuncture sites and perform blood draws using various techniques (e.g., venipuncture, finger sticks).
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions during and after blood collection and provide appropriate care if needed.
- Follow established protocols for specimen handling, processing, and transportation to the laboratory.
- Maintain accurate records of blood collections, including patient information, test orders, and specimen tracking.
- Adhere to infection control and safety guidelines to minimize the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
- Assist in maintaining a clean and organized work environment, including sanitizing equipment and disposing of biohazardous waste.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as nurses and laboratory technicians, to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Participate in continuing education and training to stay updated on best practices and new developments in phlebotomy techniques and technology.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred.
- Certification or licensure as a phlebotomist (e.g., Certified Phlebotomy Technician) may be required in some states or healthcare settings.
- Prior experience in phlebotomy or healthcare-related field is desirable but not always necessary for entry-level positions.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with patients, coworkers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Proficiency in basic medical terminology and knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to phlebotomy procedures.
- Ability to follow instructions, multitask, and work efficiently under pressure in a dynamic healthcare environment.
- Willingness to adhere to safety protocols and maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks, such as bending, reaching, and grasping.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination necessary for handling needles and other phlebotomy equipment.
- Lift and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment and supplies.
- Ability to work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and mobile blood donation units.
