Graduate Nurse is defined as: unlicensed assistive personnel since they are not eligible to be classified as a registered professional nurse (RN) applicant or licensed practical nurse (LPN) applicant.
- The new graduate should not be part of the unit/department staffing pattern, ie does not carry a patient assignment.
- Under the supervision of the Unit Director, the new graduate may begin an orientation program (didactic and clinical) in a structured setting with a defined educational program for the orientation of new graduates under the continuous, on-site supervision of a registered professional nurse.
- The new graduate must pass the NCLEX examination within three months of starting orientation.
- If the individual is not licensed by the end of three-month period or has failed the first attempt at the NCLEX examination, the new graduate may function only as an unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) i.e.) or Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) (or other suitable position for which they are qualified for with management approval).
- The new graduate may only function in the capacity of an unlicensed assistive personnel. In most cases the new graduate employee also holds an LNA license and can possibly to be moved into a LNA position. In the event the employee is not certified the department director will work with the recruiter to find another suitable position, if available. The unit/department director will work with the Clinical Recruiter to have a transfer Status Action Form (SAF) created. The new graduate will be given the opportunity for orientation to the LNA role change and will complete a LNA orientation checklist.
- The new graduate must reapply and take the NCLEX exam within the minimum requirements (wait period is a minimum of 45 days, based on the length of time determined by the board of nursing and will be reflected in the new ATT's validity dates)
- In the event the new graduate does not pass the NCLEX exam on the second (or more) attempt, St. Joseph Hospital reserves the right to terminate all supportive efforts, although the new graduate may apply for any C.N.A. position postings.
- It is the responsibility of the new graduate to notify their unit/department director of their change in status. The unit/department director will complete a SAF form and forward to Human Resources.
- Human Resources will verify the employee's name on the NH State Board of Nursing website as well as NURSYS and retain documentation in the HR file. The employee is responsible for maintaining their licensure for the duration of their employment which will be verified by the organization; failure for the employee to maintain their license in active and good standing may result in disciplinary action.
