REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Operations/Vice President
LOCATION: Remote
STATUS: Full Time (Exempt)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

JOB SUMMARY: The Senior Fellow is expected to lead initiatives, conduct, publish, and promote in-depth, high quality public policy research and learnings, convene public events engage with a wide range of stakeholders, Project Management, and work on policy and practice relevant publications intended to advance the field of equitable community development. This position will require the Senior Fellow to spend time on three main activities: leading and collaborating, testing and advancing, and research and writing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Lead a portfolio of work that tests, strengthens, and develops tools to scale evidence-based strategies that advance the field of equitable community development.
a. Shape the priorities and direction of this programme of work, making links with related work across USI and leading on and acting as senior sponsor to various
projects from planning and development to analysis, writing and publication.
2. Lead issue-focused meetings, sessions, and other events, work collaboratively with partners to create alignment to advance strategies, interact with and engage with other policy and research organizations, and current and potential funders.
3. Building on significant research and policy experience, the Senior Fellow will produce regular knowledge products, which may include policy-relevant papers, briefs, reports, strategy-based tools and other commentary.
a. Demonstrate specialist knowledge and expertise in developing literature reviews,
synthesizing qualitative and quantitative research evidence.
b. Use a range of skills to analyse various policy documents, grey literature, and official reports related to a particular policy area linked to USI's policy priorities and/or strategies that are being tested to drive economic mobility.
c. Proactively scanning policy developments and identifying areas for responsive work.
d. Demonstrate excellent communication skills, including the ability to distil complex concepts for a wide range of audiences, including internal and external stakeholders.
e. Provide senior oversight and support to other team members who draft and
communicate in-house analyses or commissioned work.
4. Lead and actively participate in community of practice activities, including seminars, recruitment activities, and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
5. Play a key role within the USI Policy and Influence team providing expert advice and support to various colleagues across USI.
6. Hold a project management standpoint to ensure that all bodies of work are completed in high action and alignment of USI's system approach.
Administrative
· Manage project contracts and budgets, and be accountable for expenditures to Director of Finance.
· Actively participate in Urban Strategies program meetings and other meetings related to the work of USI and USI's Policy and Influence division.
· Be available to occasionally work nights and/or weekends, and travel.
· Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or experience required:
Candidates may emerge from nonprofit, foundation, government, or industry backgrounds and should possess the following:
· A masters degree is required, Doctoral degree preferred;
· At least 5 years post-doctoral research or policy related experience;
· Proven record of publishing that demonstrates in-depth research, rigorous analysis, recognized excellence in the field, and policy relevance.
· Significant professional experience from the public, private, academic, or non-profit sectors.
· Proven experience working with and leading work that advances racial equity.
Skills and/or competencies required:
· Excellent written, oral, and public speaking skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with strong interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
· Extensive expertise in primary and secondary research.
· Considerable experience in building collaborations across diverse disciplines and stakeholders.
· Must be comfortable and effective in facilitating group processes.
· Must have ability to set vision, lead, and empower team members, residents, and service partners.
· Strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
