    Job purpose

    The scenic artist paints and finishes theatrical scenery to the specifications of the scene designer.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Paint and texture scenery.
    • Mix and match paint colors.
    • Read and interpret drawings and renderings.
    • See and communicate color; verbally or with swatches.
    • Work under deadline pressure.
    • Communicate with charge artists and peers in a professional and positive manner.
    • Sew fabric goods and backdrops for scenery.
    • Supervise and work closely with occasional/overhire employees.

    Qualifications

    • Demonstrate experience in a professional scenery paint shop or
    • Similar knowledge of different kinds of paints and chemicals used in scenic art
    • Knowledge of proper safety regarding chemical use, handling, and disposing
    • Knowledge of tools, brushes, sprayers, stencils etc.
    • Drawing skills
    • Color theory and paint mixing skills
    • Paint and finish wood, steel, plastic and foam scenery, including faux finishes and trompe l'oeil
    • Knowledge of different layout techniques on vertical and horizontal surfaces
    • Problem solving skills

    Working conditions

    Working in studio or in theatre show areas. Sitting, standing, working indoors. Some evening/weekend work.

    Physical requirements

    While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Ability to work at heights. Must be able to wear respirator in accordance with DCPA respirator policy.

    $24.75 hourly

    The DCPA is located in Denver, CO and all roles are based at our on-site location: th Street, Denver, CO Some roles at the DCPA may be eligible for hybrid work options. More information is available through the interview process.
