Chief Objective of Position
The Assistant Directors are responsible for the overall coordination and administration of multiple residence halls and supervision of residence life staff at Christopher Newport University.
The Assistant Directors seek to provide a safe and secure living and learning community that complements the educational mission of the University and contributes to individual and interpersonal growth and development.
As part of the Central Office Residence Life Staff, the Assistant Director position includes responsibilities of conflict resolution, programming, fostering community and leadership development, crisis intervention, some facilities management, and assisting with the administration of student conduct.
Additionally, the Assistant Directors are responsible for supervising the live-in Residential Fellows, front desk operations, and overall management of the Resident Assistants (RAs).
This position is a full-time, 12-month position with on-call requirements that include nights, weekends, breaks, and holidays. The position is live-off, therefore, requires staff to live within a reasonable response time from campus with reliable transportation.Work Tasks
Using independent judgment, assumes direct responsibility for leading and managing Residence Life operations for multiple residence halls and front desk operations.
Serves in an on-call role rotation as part of an emergency response team; includes after-hours and weekends; provides counseling and crisis intervention when needed.
Directly supervises multiple live-in Residential Fellows for the buildings in which they oversee; providing on-going training and support, regular 1-1 meetings, and annual evaluations.
Responsible for the primary oversight of Resident Assistants (RAs) within the areas they supervise. Collaborates with the Residential Fellow in RA staff evaluations, training and development, and overall support. Collaborates with the central office staff on RA recruitment and selection efforts.Responsible for the front desk operations for residence hall buildings. Collaborating with the Residential Fellow, ensures desks are covered, student staff are hired, and trainings are conducted regularly.
Responsible for creating and implementing the residential curriculum calendar and expectations for community. This includes training RAs on the appropriate use of the student tracker and providing regularly updated data.
Works collaboratively with the Associate and other Assistant Directors coordinating specific department-wide committees, task forces, and programs as needed.
Connects regularly with other offices such as Student Involvement, Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards (conduct), Counseling Services, and Center for Student Success to inform best practices for residents and provide opportunities to engage win the community.
Serves as a hearing officer for low-level student conduct violations in consultation with the Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards.
Works closely with University Housing Administration manage occupancy rosters and room changes.Opens and closes the residence halls at the start and end of each contract period; oversees the system of inspection and the assessment of damages of all student rooms.
In collaboration with other Assistant Directors, responsible for all summer housing operations for summer school students.Monitors building security, ensuring compliance with appropriate safety regulations, and implements training for emergencies. Coordinates Health and Safety inspections with Residential Fellow(s).
As part of the central office leadership team, responsible for departmental research and assessment efforts. Recommends policies and procedures that enhance the residential experience.
In collaboration with Residential Fellow(s), provides leadership and advising to the Residence Hall Associate ( RHA ).
Works cooperatively with administrative units in Student Affairs, Enrollment and Student Success, Admission, Auxiliary Services and personnel affiliated with student success on university retention initiatives.
Includes participation in regular student update meetings ( SUM ), and other committees as deemed appropriate.Required to assist and provide support for University wide programs to include, but not limited to: Orientation, Commencement, Move-In, Admission events.

Required Education
Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with experience that equates to a advanced degree.
