    Job Title: Athletic Director

     

    The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners.

    As such, we are looking for dedicated individuals who can join us in the education of the children at MSD. This is a 12-month position located at the Frederick Campus of MSD, 101 Clarke Place, Frederick, MD 21705.

    Main Purpose of Job:

    Reporting to the Dean of Student Affairs, the Athletic Director oversees the School's athletic programs for the Elementary, Middle, and High Schools of the Frederick and Columbia Campuses. The Athletic Director supports the Frederick Campus Principal in managing and supervising the Physical Education program on the Frederick Campus. In partnership with the Frederick Campus Principal and the Curriculum team, the Athletic Director provides support in physical education programming development for all ages.

    The Athletic Director works closely with the Dean of Student Affairs, the Director of Public Relations, and the Principal of both campuses. Attends all interscholastic athletics and developmental programs. Coordinates the use of sports facilities and equipment. Ensures all facilities are prepared for games. Ensures all home and away games are represented by staff from the Athletic Department.

    Participates in the maintenance of the School's Curriculum and Bilingual Education concepts throughout the school. Assumes other responsibilities as designated by the Dean of Student Affairs.

    The Athletic Director requires evening, weekend, and out-of-state travel commitments.

    Position Duties:

    • Maintain Elementary School, Middle School, and High School athletic programs at the Frederick and Columbia Campuses.
    • Assess emergency and crisis situations, make appropriate contacts and referrals, and provide interim emergency medical and other assistance until specialized assistance is available.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor coaches' training/workshops.
    • Hire, supervise, and evaluate the Assistant Athletic Directors, coaches, and the Physical Education team leader (in partnership with the Frederick Campus Principal).
    • Maintain strict confidentiality of students, as well as school personnel information.
    • Collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs to work on the School's master schedule.
    • Work with the Director of Public Relations to coordinate and disseminate athletic news and events by writing and posting stories in social media, including the production and edition of video clips.
    • Support the design of social media graphics for game day announcements and to recognize accomplishments of student-athletes, coaches, and staff members.
    • Organize media/photo days for each sport; work with a photographer.
    • Work with the athletic department staff to organize and keep inventories of sports/physical education equipment.
    • Maintain and organize archives for each sport for the website.
    • Assist with the preparation of summer sport camps.
    • Participate in appropriate professional development training.
    • Attend league meetings.
    • Perform periodic safety checks of the athletic facilities to ensure safety compliance.
    • Ensure athletic fields and facilities are prepared for hosting athletic games and contests.
    • Organize coaches' meetings.
    • Maintain records of team and individual athletic statistics and accomplishments.
    • Secure qualified officials for home games.
    • Provide support as needed while traveling to and from away games.
    • Travel to national tournaments.
    • Perform other related duties assigned by the Dean of Student Affairs.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Deaf Education or Physical Education or the equivalent.
    • Employees in this classification are required to be proficient in American Sign Language and in written English.

    Desired or Preferred Qualifications:

    • Knowledge of Deaf community is required.
    • Certification of Athletic Administration (CAA).
    • Ability to obtain crowd manager certification.
    • Ability to learn emergency medical procedures.
    • Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification.
    • Master's Degree in athletic administration or equivalent preferred and 3 years of supervisory experience preferred.
    • Maryland State Department of Education Certification in Deaf Education/Physical Education.

    Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications:

    • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

    Special Requirements:

    • New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense. (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)
    • Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation with their application.
    • Employees in this classification are required to be proficient in American Sign Language and in written English.
    • Hold or be able to obtain a valid driver's license.
