Position Summary

The Metro cemeteries team is looking for an intern to learn more about work in the cemetery industry. The intern's primary role will be centered around the cemetery program's large collection of historic records, dating back in some cases more than 175 years.

The Historic Cemeteries program administers 14 historic cemeteries that span Multnomah County, from scenic Corbett to the top of Sylvan Hill in southwest Portland. The team provides customer service to people seeking burial services, coordinates events and activities at these sites, and manages contractors' work in the cemeteries.

As the Cemetery intern you will

• Track data digitally using our software program, called PlotBox.
• Confirm accurate data in our system by comparing the digital data to paper records ensuring accuracy of information.
• Learn about the historic Portland region by helping with genealogy work to make the cemetery records more complete.
• Cultivate and develop administrative skills and general office tasks.
• Gain customer service and sensitivity skills.
• Discover what careers are available in the cemetery field.
• Gain skill with database software, including data entry, confirming accurate data and digitizing records.
• More opportunities may be provided, based on the intern's skills and interests.

Minimum qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Any combination of education, professional, volunteer and lived experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.

Like to have qualifications

• Previous experience working in a cemetery or funeral environment.
• Previous experience working with historic records.
• Previous experience working within a government agency.

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATON
The full-salary range for this position is step 1 $20.20 per hour to step 3 $24.00.

However, unless a candidate's qualifications justify, based on the requirements and Metro's internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between Step 1 $20.20 to the equity range Step # 2 $22.00 per hour.

This position is eligible for overtime and is non-represented. It is classified as an Intern.
