Minimum Qualifications:
RN from an accredited professional nursing school.
Minimum of four (4) years RN experience, including recent Flight Nursing experience and Critical Care or Emergency Nursing. Must possess and maintain a current nursing license to practice in the United States.
Current BCLS and ACLS certification(s).
Job Description:
To provide care and treatment for life support and/or stabilization of chronically or acutely ill and/or injured patients on station and/or on flights from and within Antarctica in collaboration with other health team members in support of the United States Antarctica Program.
Specific Job-Related Duties:
Autonomously evaluates critically ill or injured patients of all age groups, provides therapeutic intervention, emergency interventions, and preparation for transport (via ground, helicopter, or airplane) from station, field camps, accident scenes.
Maintains Medevac supplies and equipment prepared for immediate use. Provide nursing services within the McMurdo Station clinic and cross trains to support clinic services as needed.
Provides in-patient care when patients have been admitted to the ward.
Assesses for and detects changes in the status of patients and demonstrates a proactive approach to solving patient problems.
Maintains complete and accurate records of all patient encounters.
Communicates effectively in working with outside institutions/agencies to include National Science Foundation, Grantees, Antarctica Support Contract employees and subcontractors, and other USAP participants as well as New Zealand hospitals, EMS, police and fire department personnel.
Plans, organizes and positions equipment and supplies for use in emergency conditions before, during and after transports ensuring all medical equipment is returned properly to the clinic.
Collects, compiles and assesses clinical and demographic data regarding Medevacs and prepares an annual summary report with recommendations.Performs all physical requirements of job in confined spaces and under adverse environmental conditions
Participates in staff meetings, in-service sessions, competencies, and maintenance of educational requirements for nursing certifications.
Participates in planning and coordination of Mass Casualty Incident drills.
Flight nurse is expected to complete transport missions initiated with in the timeframe of a work shift, understanding the completion of these missions might require working beyond normal work hours.
Job Functions:
Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
May perform community duties such as shoveling snow, cooking, cleaning, and handling/loading cargo as necessary
