    MADERA COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

    CLASS TITLE:

    SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

    BASIC FUNCTION:

    Under the general supervision and direction of an assigned administrator, provide itinerant services at various school sites to students with communicative disorders; work with students individually or in small groups in areas of language development/articulation, voice, and fluency therapy.

    Promote, by his/her action, the qualities of good citizenship, cooperative attitude, responsible conduct, good work habits, initiative, and appropriate attire as deemed by his/her immediate supervisor.

    Meet with a variety of administrators, teachers, and parents and develop strong working relations with these groups.


    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    Screen, assess, diagnose, and identify children with various types of communicative disorders in accordance with procedures outlined in Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Master Plan for Special Education and prepare related materials.

    Participate in the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for each child enrolled in the program in cooperation with parents and school staff.

    Maintain accurate records and reports for each child enrolled in the program including diagnostic information, goals and objectives, pupil progress, pertinent conference information involving parents and other professionals.


    Provide appropriate inservice to site staff to enable them to be involved in implementing appropriate programs for assigned children.

    May supervise, coordinate, and plan the work of Instructional Assistants or other paraprofessionals assigned to the program.

    Provide therapy in accordance with the needs of the selected students of the caseload.

    Prepare and maintain records, reports, files, and documentation as required by Madera County Office of Education and Madera/Mariposa SELPA administrative policies, state and federal laws and regulations.

    Communicate with parents, teachers, administrators, and staff relative to the individual needs of the students in planning and implementing the speech program.


    Uphold confidentiality guidelines pertaining to students and their families.

    Provide necessary supervision of students in out-of-classroom activities as directed to ensure their safety.

    Monitor student achievement through periodic, ongoing assessment and adjust instruction in response to student data.

    Act as resource person for other school personnel and staff in matters related to the field of Speech Pathology and Audiology.

    Maintain professional competence through participation in inservice education activities provided by the Madera County Office of Education and in self-directed professional growth activities.


    Develop and disseminate therapy schedules to all appropriate individuals.

    Make appropriate referrals for students with diagnosed disorders.


    OTHER DUTIES:

    Legal requirements, state guidelines, regulations, policies, and procedures as they relate to the field of Speech & Language Pathology.
    Individualized Education Plan process.
    Speech and language and/or communication disorders.
    Behavioral modification techniques.
    Current instructional methodologies, technology, and techniques associated with communicatively disabled students.
    Curriculum and lesson plan development to meet IEP or other educational goals.
    How to write effective, standards-based student goals and objectives.
    Appropriate options of delivery methods and services.
    Appropriate modifications and interventions of classroom curriculum.
    Basic grading procedures and/or recordkeeping techniques.
    Basic instructional strategies, methods, and techniques.
    Child guidance and development principles and practices related to children with special needs.
    Oral and written communication skills.
    Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
    Operation of a computer and assigned software.


    ABILITY TO:
    Apply testing, evaluation, and assessment procedures.
    Plan and implement speech and language remediation programs.
    Formulate goals and objectives for students placed in the speech program.
    Consult with parents, teachers, and administration in conducting meetings.
    Work cooperatively with staff, districts, agencies, and general public in achieving common goals.
    Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels and contribute to a positive work environment.
    Communicate effectively with staff, district personnel, members of the public, and representatives of other agencies.

    Evaluate and analyze complex problems, issues, and concerns and render judgment, make timely and effective decisions, and solve problems efficiently.

    Understand and relate to children with special needs.
    Coordinate service with the regular education teacher and work with core curriculum.
    Administer a variety of assessments.
    Implement curriculum that addresses student goals and objectives.
    Deliver methods and services to match specific student needs.
    Develop and implement modifications and intervention strategies.
    Prepare clear and concise written correspondence and policies.
    Present a positive image of the Madera County Office of Education.
    Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
    Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
    Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
    Operate a computer and assigned office equipment.
    Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
    Meet schedules and timelines.
    Work independently with little direction.
    Plan and organize work.


    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    Any combination equivalent to:
    One or more of the following Credentials is required:


    • Clinical or Rehabilitative Services-Language Speech and Hearing Credential
    • Clinical or Rehabilitative Services-Language Speech and Hearing Credential
    with Special Class Authorization
    Certificate of Clinical Competency or California License preferred.


    LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
