- Repairs andmaintainsthe physical structures of the Madison County Jail using hand and power tools.
- Performs skilled maintenance and repair work on plumbing fixtures and systems, including associated piping, valves, and components.
- Performs minor to moderate electrical repair work, including installing and repairing lighting, electrical outlets, ballasts, switches, and related components.
- Performs maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance work on HVAC systems and related equipment.
- Repairs doors, locks, ceilings, walls, and replaces ceiling tiles asrequired.
- Conducts inspections of the Madison County Jail toidentifyelectrical, plumbing, HVAC, and structural deficiencies.
- Diagnoses routine maintenance issues and determinesappropriate correctiveactions.
- Performs preventative maintenance to ensure building systemsoperatesafely and efficiently.
- Responds to emergency maintenance issues andparticipatesin an on-call rotation asrequired.
- Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.
- Complies with all safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Performs related work as required.
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and practices used in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC maintenance and repair.
- Working knowledge of blueprint reading and the hazards and safety precautions associated with maintenance trades.
- Ability to diagnose routine maintenance problems and perform effective repairs.
- Ability to write, understand, and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in performing assigned duties.
- Ability to perform work requiring mechanical aptitude and technical skill.
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, and climb ladders.
- Ability to work from scaffolding and in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

- Must possess Universal Refrigerant Certification.
- Must possess Apprentice Plumbing and Gas Certification.
- Must be able to work on an on-call basis.

Position Overview
Under general supervision, the Jail Maintenance Specialist II performs skilled inspections, preventive maintenance, and repair work on the plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and structural systems of the Madison County Jail. This position is responsible for maintaining the safety, functionality, and physical integrity of the facility by performing a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks in accordance with established procedures, safety standards, and applicable codes. Work assignments are received from a supervisor and require the exercise of independent judgment and technical skill.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC repair work. Experience reading blueprints is preferred.

Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.
Employee Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule
