    Position Summary

    The King Laboratory in the department of Bioengineering is relocating from Vanderbilt University to Rice University in Summer 2024 and is seeking a reliable and team-oriented Lab Manager. They will support our groundbreaking research into the Mechan transduction of cancer and immune cells, helping to translate these technologies from in vitro research, to preclinical in vivo studies and collaborative clinical studies. The successful candidate will have experience and familiarity with biological laboratory procedures and equipment, will help maintain the laboratory and its operations, carry out experimental protocols in support of the research projects of the lab, and train lab members in safety and experimental procedures as needed. The Lab Manager will work in collaboration with a King Lab administrative assistant, who will help in administrative tasks such as procurement and reimbursements, documentation, and organization of lab meetings and events. The ideal candidate is certified, or willing to pursue certification, for phlebotomy to perform routine blood draws from donors brought to the King Lab.

    The working location for this position is in the King Laboratory on the 4th floor of the Bioscience Research Collaborative (BRC) at Rice University, and occasionally in core facilities and collaborating labs in the Texas Medical Center. This is a full-time position, during regular business hours with some flexibility.

    Requirements
    • Bachelor's degree
      • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted.
    • 1+ years of related experience in biological laboratory
    • Skills Required
      • Ability to set work priorities and meet deadlines
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
      • Ability to understand and communicate complex instructions
      • Knowledge of best practices for a research lab
      • Excellent organizational, time management, and verbal and written communication skills
      • Excellent Microsoft Office Suite skills
      • Strong attention to detail; ability to be proactive, takes initiative
      • Ability to work in a collaborative environment
      • Excellent analytical skills
      • Knowledge of analytical laboratory equipment
    Essential Functions
    • Manages laboratory and assists with setting up the laboratory
    • Coordinates the day-to-day technical operations in the lab
    • Coordinates all aspects of the processes
    • Procures research materials and supplies for the laboratory, with the lab administrative assistant
    • Ensures and promotes lab safety and routine laboratory hygiene
    • Maintains laboratory apparatus and equipment
    • Supervises research technicians and students in the lab
    • Trains students regarding research techniques
    • Performs all other duties as assigned
    Preferences
    • It is desired that the Lab Manager be certified in phlebotomy, or willing to seek certification, to perform routine blood draws on donors brought to the King Laboratory.
