    Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
    Purpose:

    As part of Duke Energy's Integrated Methane Monitoring Platform Expansion project, and work to-date in the methane measurement and quantification arena, we are hiring 2 graduate and 2 undergraduate students pursuing an MBA, BIDA, ISBA or other business degreea to serve on a project team responsible for developing a scientific approach to methane measurement, data aggregation and analysis, and statistical techniques employed to quantify emissions via direct measurement methods. Interested students will work with a group of Lead Data Scientists, academic and technology partners that offer transdisciplinary expertise to help advance and accelerate the development and ability to scale a methane monitoring platform.

    Description of Work Continued:
    Scope and Roles/Responsibilities:
    • Assist and support Lead Data Scientist in developing experimental design and data collection and gathering plans
    • Drive to and participate in any manual data collection and controlled releases at multiple NC Natural Gas sites/facilities as needed
    • Manipulate, combine, and refine large databases/datasets to produce information suitable for analysis
    • Develop algorithms for data analysis and write computer code to implement them in python
    • Establish scalable, efficient, and automated processes for large scale data analyses and model development, validation, and implementation
    • Create graphics for data visualization and information display

    Required Skills/Expertise:

    • Advance knowledge of math and statistics to conduct novel research
    • Familiarity with python libraries such as pandas, geopandas, shapely, numpy, scikit-learn, tensorflorw, requests, etc.

    § Proficiency with Python, SQL, AWS, Unix/Linux shell, Git; Hands-on experiences in large datasets including signal, GIS, image, text or sensor data; Understanding of machine learning and deep learning methods and frameworks (Tensorflow, Keras, Pytorch, etc); Hands-on experience in designing, developing, and deploying machine learning models

    • Excellent oral, written, and technical communication skills and a solid command of the English language; Demonstrated ability to communicate complex relationships and concepts using data to drive change


    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
    Preferred Skills/Experience:
    • Familiarity with GIS (ArcGIS or python geospatial packages) and working with geospatial data.
