    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Cardiovascular Technologist (CV Tech) functions as a healthcare provider, working under the delegated authority of the supervising physician of the Noninvasive Laboratory. The Cardiovascular Technologist's role and responsibilities include the providing of medical diagnostic services and its various clinical specialties. The activities performed are consistent with their education and training, in accordance with the facility policies and procedures and applicable professional standards. The Cardiovascular Technologists' essential functions are categorized as:

    • Primary Responsibilities: Core competencies and/or skills that typify the work of the CV Tech.
    • Other Responsibilities: Optional functions that may also be required from Noninvasive (NI) Manager.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: PERFORMANCE OF CV TECHNOLOGIST

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Conduct and administer cardiac exercise stress tests including treadmill and exercise stress echocardiogram, nuclear cardiology tests and enhanced external counter pulsation (EECP) using approved procedures and protocols
    • Assure that the supervising physician is present and available
    • Assume responsibility for the safety of the patient during the CV examination
    • Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information in relation to testing ordered
    • Evaluate any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patient's inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures
    • Provide education and instructions to patients in relation to NI testing in a manner appropriate to the patient's ability to understand
    • Conduct patient clinical assessment prior to exercise, assuring safety for patient and staff
    • Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards set by the organization
    • Provide preliminary reports of exercise test utilizing computerized software of examinations for the interpreting physician
    • Scan Holter monitors using approved procedure
    • Prepare preliminary reports of Holter Scans utilizing computerized software for use by the interpreting physician
    • Conduct and assume responsibility for EECP working in conjunction with clinical nurse manager
    • Manage and maintain MCOT monitor devices operations while reporting alerts and findings to appropriate staff
    • Manage enrollment procedure and logs for extended holters and event monitors (Biotel, iRhythm, etc.)
    • Maintain environment and workspace to a neat and clean standard, ordering and restocking supplies in relation to non-invasive department needs
    • Performs clerical duties as needed

    Other Responsibilities:

    • Support the interpreting physician by contributing technical data, impressions, and professional knowledge to facilitate the completion of the final diagnostic report utilizing computerized software
    • Ordering and distribution of medical supplies applied to NI and other SDCC departments
    • Assist with maintaining and upkeep of daily operation in Non-invasive Laboratory
    • Participate in departmental/staff meetings

    DOCUMENTATION AND REPORTING

    Responsibilities in the absence or in conjunction with of the Noninvasive Manager:

    • Operate the Archiving and Communication System (Scimage Picom365). Provide accurate and precise input and prepare preliminary findings for physician review
    • Maintain knowledge of NI schedule (NI rooms/sonographers) to assist with scheduling/reception questions
    • Ability to connect and troubleshoot equipment/computers utilizing our tech support resources

    QUALITY ASSESSMENT/QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Ensure that the exercise test/Holter scan meets the facility standards for Quality Assurance before findings are released for interpretation
    • Ensure medical equipment is functional and up to standard
    • Ensure patient compliance with remote monitoring equipment
    • Work with the appropriate staff to ensure quality patient care

    Other Responsibilities:

    • Carry out QA (Quality Assurance) protocols and QI (Quality Improvement) measures within the Noninvasive Department
    • Patient centered care purposed towards positive patient satisfaction.
    • Participate with NI manager in the accreditation process

    PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Demonstrate professional growth and lifelong learning (i.e., continuing medical education in the specialty area(s) performed

    Other Responsibilities

    • Participate in Research Protocols provided by the Research Department
    • Foster a collaborative atmosphere with other members of the Noninvasive Team

    QUALIFICATIONS - MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or Kinesiology; or,
    • Associate's degree in Cardiovascular Technology or EMT certification

    Training and Experience:

    • Skilled professional with a solid foundation in Exercise Science
    • Twelve months of accumulated experience within the last three years in comparable job classification may be required
    • Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills and software programs used for documentation activities and report generation
    • Maintenance of current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for HealthCare Workers or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification for HealthCare workers
    • Completion of basic cardiac arrythmia course with certification or completion of basic EKG arrhythmia course within 90 days of hire
    • EKG recognition and interpretation class and certification
    • Records and calculates all necessary parameters and interprets ECG tracings for diagnostic purposes; monitors and integrates cardiac rhythms
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with all levels of staff and patients
    • IV certification a plus, but not required

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    Equipment Operated:

    • Standard medical exam/office equipment, which includes frequent computer use for electronic health record and practice management system.

    Working Conditions:

    • Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings. Well-lighted, well-ventilated, adequate space. May be exposed to unpleasant odors, cuts, infections, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, strains and injuries from patients and equipment. This position may require flexibility in schedule, some late night, weekend clinics and traveling may be required.

    Mental/Physical Requirements:

    • Frequent standing required. Must be able to lift and carry laptop computer. Occasional stress from workload. Requires adequate hearing & vision. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds of supplies. Ability to stand for an extended period of time.

    While this Job Description is meant to provide an overview and specific responsibilities for the Cardiovascular Technologist, SDCC's management reserves the right to make changes, adjustments and revisions, as needed, to this document and will coordinate such modifications with the Non-invasive Cardiology Manager and/or SDCC's BOD or management team.

    ACCOUNTABILITY

    1. Accountable to and under the direct supervision of the Manager of Noninvasive Cardiology and/or Lead Sonographer.

    2. Accountable to an under the indirect supervision of the Chief Administrative Officer and Clinical Director of the San Diego Cardiac Center Medical Group, Inc.
