Description
Electronics Specialists in the Navy's Submarine Fleet
The most secretive and technologically advanced of Navy vessels, a submarine requires a highly trained and skilled community to operate its classified systems.
Within the Submarine Electronics field, there are four distinct focus areas that require unique skill sets and training paths:
Fire Control Technicians (FTs)
Operate, test, and maintain submarine combat control systems, participate in weapons handling functions, and operate non-tactical computer systems.
Sonar Technicians, Submarine (STSs)
Specialize in underwater acoustic technologies, operating sonar, oceanographic equipment, and auxiliary sonar for surveillance, scientific data collection, and tracking enemy targets.
Electronics Technicians (ET/RF and ET/NAV)
Install, administer, and maintain onboard communications and navigation systems. ET/RFs work with radio communication equipment, while ET/NAVs specialize in submarine navigation and radio equipment.
As a Navy Submarine electronics specialist, you may serve at sea or ashore, operating and repairing systems on submarines at bases, ports, or undisclosed ocean waters. Deployment times can be several months with limited time on the surface.
A rigorous training program awaits those who join this elite community. Initial 7-9 week Recruit Training is followed by Basic Enlisted Submarine School and specialized "A" School instruction in areas such as electricity, electronics, computers, digital systems, and fiber optics.
With advancement opportunities based on performance and valuable credentialing possibilities, the journey of a Navy Submarine electronics specialist offers many rewards.
Navy technical and operational training in submarine electronics can also translate to credit hours toward a degree through the American Council on Education. Additionally, opportunities like the Navy College Program, Tuition Assistance, and the Post-9/11 GI Bill make further education accessible.
To become an Enlisted Sailor in the Submarine Electronics field, applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and meet eligibility requirements for a security clearance.
