    Primary Function

    Provide individual and group peer support recovery services for individuals with substance abuse and/or psychiatric symptoms provided in the Recovery Center.

    Ensure access to quality Recovery Center Services for individuals. Provide input into programming for the Recovery Center. Lead Recovery Center classes as needed.
    Job Duties
    Direct Service Functions


    • Provide direct peer support services to individuals on an individual and group basis at home and in the community.
    • Facilitate small groups and classes in the Recovery Center.
    • Abide by the NC Certified Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics.
    • Document all treatment and clinically significant events for the medical record in the manner prescribed by CIHA policies and procedures.
    • Follow all applicable privacy/confidentiality policies, procedures, and practices for maintenance and release of patient records and clinical information, including EBCI, CIHA, IHS, DHHS, HIPAA, JCAHO, CFR 42, or other licensing bodies.
    • Attend clinical staffing as an integral component of a treatment team, facilitating the discussion of patient data, and formulating changes to the treatment plan.
    • Provide care coordination and case management for clients as needed.
    • Provide direct assistance as needed for clients accessing recovery programs, and assist individuals to develop recovery management plans.
    • Works as part of a team with the Recovery Services Manager and the Recovery Center Lead to plan and conduct recovery support activities in the community.
    • Provide written, telephone, and face to face consultation services to various persons and organizations which affect clients including physicians, hospitals, medical care providers, law enforcement officers, social services and community agencies hospitals, schools, courts, probation officers.
    • Provide regular "check-ups" via telephone and in person to clients to further engage them in services and to assist in relapse prevention.
    • Make effective use of clinical supervision and consultation.
    • Participate in community planning and implementation of programs to help resolve such complex issues as improving coordination of services or developing programs to serve the community.
    • Obtain continuing education as needed through in-service training and through access and tuition payment for approved training seminars and workshops.
    • Direct service productivity standards may be required for this position.
    Administrative Functions


    • Work closely with the Recovery Center Lead to develop and manage the Recovery Center programming and class schedule.
    • Collect data and provide regular reports for department, executive management and CIHA board use.
    • Provide telephone support, reception and basic office support in support of the Recovery Center.
    • Represent CIHA in the community by serving in various meetings and workgroups as directed.
    • Monitor outcomes and make adjustments as needed to maximize positive outcomes for individuals.
    • Ensure use of evidenced based and emerging best practice in all recovery services.
    • Ensure Cherokee Culture is recognized and affirmed in recovery services.
    • Ensure appropriate use of cultural and alternative healing practices.
    • Support and facilitate access to 12 step groups, informal, community and faith based services.
    • Support and facilitate access to GED and other educational services which will benefit clients.
    • Support and facilitate access to family support groups and programs.
    • Promptly review and respond to any incidents or complaints according to CIHA policy.
    Education/Experience


    • This position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent, at minimum. Lived experience with MH and/or SA issues and a minimum of one year of sustained recovery is required.
    "Qualified Professional" means, within the MH/DD/SAS system of care:

    • an individual who holds a license, provisional license, certificate, registration or permit issued by the governing board regulating a human service profession, except a registered nurse who is licensed to practice in the State of North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing who also has four years of full-time accumulated experience in MH/DD/SA with the population served; or
    - a graduate of a college or university with a Master's degree in a human service field and has one year of full-time, post-graduate degree accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served, or a substance abuse professional who has one year of full-time, post-graduate degree accumulated supervised experience in alcoholism and drug abuse counseling; or
    - a graduate of a college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a human service field and has two years of full-time, post
    • Bachelor's degree accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served, or a substance abuse professional who has two years of full time, post
    • Bachelor's degree accumulated supervised experience in alcoholism and drug abuse counseling; or
    - a graduate of a college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a field other than human services and has four years of full-time, post
    • Bachelor's degree accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served, or a substance abuse professional who has four years of full time, post
    • Bachelor's degree accumulated supervised experience in alcoholism and drug abuse counseling.
    "Associate Professional (AP)" within the mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse services (MH/DD/SAS) system of care means an individual who is a:

    • graduate of a college or university with a Masters' degree in a human service field with less than one year of full-time, post-graduate degree accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served, or a substance abuse professional with less than one year of full-time, post-graduate degree accumulated supervised experience in alcoholism and drug abuse counseling. Supervision shall be provided by a qualified professional with the population served until the individual meets one year of experience. The supervisor and the employee shall develop an individualized supervision plan upon hiring. The parties shall review the plan annually; or
    - graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a human service field with less than two years of full-time, post-bachelor's degree accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served, or a substance abuse professional with less than two years of full-time, post-bachelor's degree accumulated supervised experience in alcoholism and drug abuse counseling. Supervision shall be provided by a qualified professional with the population served until the individual meets two years of experience. The supervisor and the employee shall develop an individualized supervision plan upon hiring. The parties shall review the plan annually; or
    - graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a field other than human services with less than four years of full-time, post-bachelor's degree accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served, or a substance abuse professional with less than four years of full-time, post-bachelor's degree accumulated supervised experience in alcoholism and drug abuse counseling. Supervision shall be provided by a qualified professional with the population served until the individual meets four years of experience. The supervisor and the employee shall develop an individualized supervision plan upon hiring. The parties shall review the plan annually; or
    - registered nurse who is licensed to practice in the State of North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing with less than four years of full-time accumulated experience in MH/DD/SA with the population served. Supervision shall be provided by a qualified professional with the population served until the individual meets four years of experience. The supervisor and the employee shall develop an individualized supervision plan upon hiring. The parties shall review the plan annually.

    Preferred Qualifications


    • Specific experience working with the Native American population; experience in Recovery Services; experience working with Peer Support services; WRAP Facilitators certification; NC Certified Peer Support Specialists certification.
    • Must possess valid driver's license.
    • If the applicant is not a currently certified Peer Support Specialist, must be willing to obtain that certification within a specified period of time.
