    Stanford Graduate School of Business

Stanford's Graduate School of Business has built a global reputation based on its immersive and innovative management programs. We provide students with a transformative leadership experience, pushing the boundaries of knowledge with faculty research, and offering a portfolio of entrepreneurial and non-degree programs that deliver global impact like no other. We are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in service of our mission of developing innovative, principled, and insightful leaders who change lives, change organizations, and change the world. We invite you to be part of this mission.

The Global Capital Allocation Project (GCAP) is recruiting for a Data Scientist based at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in Stanford, CA. GCAP ) is a growing team of professionals devoted to answering major policy and societal questions related to international macroeconomics and finance. GCAP works closely with leading academic, government, and nonprofit institutions across the globe to generate research that informs policy and practice. The lab is a dynamic environment with a "get-it-done" attitude where everyone actively helps improve efficiency to maximize research output and impact.

The Data Scientist will help promote GCAP's mission by developing and managing internal lab data and code pipelines for multiple large-scale projects. The focus of the role will be on assembling, assessing, merging, and analyzing Big Data, designing and developing applications and analytical insights, and testing and building automation tools. This includes helping with assembling and validating the lab's internal research-ready databases, starting from many separate raw databases. These processes underlie the lab's public-facing research estimates and analyses. The Data Scientist will conceptualize and control production code and develop graphical analyses representing key data insights visually in a meaningful way. The Data Scientist interfaces with the Data, Analytics, and Research Computing (DARC) team within the Stanford GSB Research Hub and the University more widely, to streamline the external data acquisition and ingestion processes.

The Data Scientist is accountable for reporting on all lab activities to the GCAP lab Faculty Director at Stanford University, Professor Matteo Maggiori. The Data Scientist also interfaces with all lab researchers in helping build data, code, and analysis that fosters the lab's objectives.

Note: This is a two-year fixed-term position and will work a hybrid schedule requiring availability two days per week or an equivalent time monthly on-site (as determined by GCAP).

    Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the management of the lab's internal code and databases. Develop and maintain efficient code to import, clean, and validate data, as well as merging different datasets to create the lab's internal research-ready databases. Use software development best practices to develop prototypes for selected solutions; ensure effective application and integration.
  • Regularly generate public-facing estimates released through the lab's website. Work closely with the lab researchers to produce new analyses to support research goals. Examples include creative alternative data collection, benchmarking of new data, complex data merges, analyzing data using regression models and machine learning approaches, and creating graphical displays or interfaces for research results.
  • Lead the efforts for internal replication and validation of replication packages as research papers converge to publication.
  • Contribute to executing policy-related analyses that are put forward by the lab partners and oversee junior researchers in performing this analysis in collaboration with senior researchers.
  • Actively contribute to the training of junior researchers on coding best practices, new coding languages, or modeling/estimation approaches. Acts as a first point of contact on data and code questions for junior researchers and helps new joiners understand the lab's internal data and code base.
  • Lead and perform the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of Big Data systems and data-intensive solutions that are scalable, optimized, and fault-tolerant. The systems will leverage Stanford's high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, as well as computational infrastructure at our partner institutions for outside collaborations.
  • Define and develop guidelines, standards, and processes to ensure analysis quality and integrity. Coordinate with GSB and University data acquisition and onboarding teams to facilitate the collection of new data, validation and regular updating of the data, and continuous testing of the data pipelines.
  • Elicit, review, and validate the lab's internal data system requirements, including data integration, meta-data, and modeling. Design the lab's internal data architecture and data integration layers.
  • Ensure effective integration and security of applications, data, and components to deliver a high-quality system that supports real-time data production and complex, data-intensive scientific user analysis.
  • To be successful in this position, you will bring:

    • Bachelor's degree in scientific or analytic field and eight years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required.
    • Advanced knowledge of database systems, including SQL and data modeling, structured and unstructured.
    • Advanced knowledge of parallel and distributed data processing techniques and platforms in a high-performance computing environment, including via SLURM scheduling systems.
    • Advanced knowledge in scripting and programming languages, including Python, Bash, Unix environments, R, and Stata.
    • Advanced knowledge of analytical tools and statistical techniques, including Jupyter notebooks, statistical modeling (such as regression models), and machine learning.
    • Knowledge of GPU computing, PyTorch, and training and evaluating deep learning models (preferred, but not required).
    • Extensive experience in the evaluation, design, and deployment of new tools, frameworks, and patterns to build scalable Big Data platforms. Expertise in architecting and deploying reliable data systems and data quality management systems. Ability to use and integrate security controls for backend systems.
    • A strong interest in economics and finance is necessary. Background knowledge or training in these fields is preferred but not required.
    • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills and in presentation skills. Ability to document use cases, solutions, and recommendations.
    • Superior project management skills with exceptional attention to detail. Ability to manage complex, multi-year projects from conception to completion. Strategic thinking and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and effectively manage time. Ability to mentor, motivate, and provide guidance to junior researchers.
    • Superior teamwork and problem-solving skills. Good judgment and strong decision-making ability. Ability to incorporate long-term or big-picture implications of each option or constraint in decision-making and to ensure buy-in and understanding of the decision as relevant. Ability to balance the mix of multi-year high-level developments and day-to-day lower-level tasks. Ability to interface effectively with other teams.
