    Job Responsibilities

    Performs field engineering on moderate to complex bridge projects utilizing basic engineering principals as it applies to the areas of but not limited to concrete, foundations, beams steel, traffic control and erosion control. Performs as a certified inspector in these fields. Thoroughly understands the plans and specifications and interprets these to others. Monitors work zones on assigned projects to ensure traffic control devices are placed according to South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) standards, contract documents, and the plans. Notifies the contractor promptly of traffic control deficiencies and / or safety issues and ensures deficiencies are corrected immediately. Prepares complete and accurate engineering data and reports for assigned projects. This includes but is not limited to entering daily work reports into Site Manager for contract records and payment, computing horizontal and vertical alignments to determine elevations and reference points, pile bearings, beam deflections and completing other required reports. Obtains samples and certifications of materials to submit to the laboratory for testing and acceptance. Performs filed testing as required per SCDOT standards on materials used. Interprets the results for compliance to plans and specifications. Assists with compiling payable quantities on bridge construction projects and preparing monthly pay estimates. Assists Resident with completing the final construction plans at project completion. Monitors contractor staking of construction items. This requires precise use of surveying instruments. Checks contractor performed staking for accuracy and ensures that necessary changes are made in a timely manner. Performs inspections as a certified asphalt roadway technician and earthwork, drainage, and base course inspector. Investigates materials and workmanship problems and recommends solutions.

    Minimum and Additional Requirements

    A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

    Employee must be able to work outside and in inclement weather. Employee must be able to meet the following physical demands: ability to lift 50lbs, carrying, attendance, cleaning, climbing, crawling, driving, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, removing, sitting, speaking, squatting, standing, twisting, walking and writing.
