    Labor & Employment Attorney - Advice and Counseling

    Job Level: Senior Associate, Of Counsel, and/or Partner level attorneys

    Location: Quarles' San Diego, California office is preferred, but Quarles is open to considering applicants based outside of San Diego. Our San Diego office was created by the 2023 combination of Paul, Plevin, Sullivan & Connaughton, a premier labor and employment law firm, and Quarles & Brady, a national full-service law firm.

    Job Type: Full-time, 1750 – 1950 billable hours annually.

    Job Description:

    Quarles is seeking an experienced Labor & Employment attorney to join its Chambers nationally - ranked Labor & Employment management-side practice group as an advisor and counselor to employers. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of experience in labor and employment law, with substantial experience providing advice and counsel to California employers on a wide range of issues. The candidate should have a strong understanding of state and federal laws and regulations governing employment in California, including but not limited to the Fair Employment and Housing Act and Title VII, laws relating to disability accommodation and discrimination, the California Labor Code and Fair Labor Standards Act, the WARN Act and Cal-WARN, and the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the ICRAA. The candidate should also have experience advising employers regarding discipline and discharge, responding to employee complaints, responding to agency charges, and drafting employer policies, employment agreements, and separation and severance agreements. No portable practice required.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide legal advice and counsel to CA-based clients on a wide range of labor and employment matters.
    • Draft employment policies, employment agreements, and severance/settlement agreements.
    • Conduct legal research and analysis on labor and employment issues for multi-state employers.
    • Represent clients in agency proceedings (e.g., CCRD, EEOC, Labor Commissioner, Cal-OSHA).
    • Develop and maintain client relationships.

    Qualifications:

    • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
    • Admission to the bar in the state of California.
    • At least 7 years of focused experience in labor and employment law.
    • Strong understanding of federal and state employment laws.
    • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Ability to work directly with clients on a wide range of employment-related advice matters.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Benefit eligibility is dependent on hours. Compensation is determined upon the market in which the position is located, the responsibilities of the position, the experience, education, and skills of the applicant, including book of business for more experienced roles, and other job-related factors. The salary range for a Senior Associate and Of Counsel physically located in California is $200,000 to $300,000 per year.
