    Role Overview:

    The successful candidate will act as the central point of contact for all tax related matters - including, but not limited to federal income tax, sales and use tax, and property tax.

    The majority of federal and state income tax work is currently outsourced.The Tax Manager will manage the relationship with the external accounting firm: supply information, provide input on decisions, identify changes in the business which require tax analysis.The Tax Manager may eventually be responsible for completing some of the work currently outsourced.

    The Tax Manager will recruit and manage a staff with comprehensive responsibility for the sales and use tax and the property tax functions for DS Smith North America.

    Located in Atlanta, Ga., he or she will partner with stakeholders across the company including field finance leaders, DSS Corporate Accounting, DSS Finance Systems teams and Group Tax.

    The ideal candidate should have strong people and customer service skills, a track record of process improvement, exceptional tax experience, and excellent teamwork skills along with an ability to work in an ever-changing environment.

    Areas of Responsibility:

    Tax
    • Plan for and develop overall return calendar and coordinate timing and inputs with internal and external tax team procedures - income tax, sales/use tax, property tax.
    • Maintain effective control procedures over all aspects of the tax process.
    • Ensure accurate, timely filing of other business-related filings.
    • Facilitate outsourced federal and state income tax filings, applications for tax credits, and provisions.
    • Review income tax returns and quarterly/yearly tax projections
    • Manage and facilitate IRS income tax audits: preparing responses, creating schedules, etc.
    • Monitor legislative and regulatory tax law developments, communicate the effects of these developments to management and the Group tax team and create strategies to capitalize on changes to taxation legislation.
    • Provide support with various internal audits and special tax related projects.
    • Find and implement opportunities for process improvement in company tax procedures - income tax, sales/use tax, property tax.
    • Maintain Avalara sales and use tax matrix and communications with end users.
    • Manage filing of sales and use tax returns for all implicated states.
    • Manage process for collecting and administering sales and use tax exemption certificates.
    • Transition responsibility for property tax from field to tax team
    • Manage comprehensive property tax processes (returns, assessments, appeals, etc.)
    • Liaise with the Group Tax team on a regular basis to keep them updated on progress, areas of risk, and opportunities available to the Group. Group Tax will provide support as and when needed.
    Reporting/Other
    • Work with the accounting and leadership teams to identify opportunities for process improvement and potential areas of risk.
    • Prepare year-end reporting packages, year-end schedules for NAPP Corporate Finance and Group, and local operations reporting needs.
    • Complete monthly roll-forward reporting for NAPP /Group
    • Provide ad-hoc reporting.
    • Cultivate strong working relationships with Finance and field personnel.
    • Lead a team of 2-3 accountants.
    • Develop talent, manage performance and morale/engagement of the team.
    • Other projects and assignments as necessary
