    General Description:


    Under broad supervision from the Engineering Manager, performs work in the operation and maintenance of the generation plant and assists as needed in the operation of other Power Department facilities associated with the transmission, distribution, protection and control of electricity.


    Minimum Requirements:


    Graduation from high school and successful completion of four (4) years of technical training in a power related field, plus a minimum of four (4) years working as a generation maintenance technician, which could include the following areas: gas turbine generation, hydro generation, substation maintenance, relaying and SCADA, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.


    Special Requirements:
    Must possess a valid Utah Commercial Driver License.
    Must be generally available for emergency "call-out" at any time of day, year-round, regardless of weather conditions.

    Must take troubleshooter responsibility for plants and substations several times per year for a period of seven days each, as determined by an assignment schedule adopted by the department.

    Must be willing to accept standby assignment when needed.


    Directs day-today operations and maintenance of power generation resources; directs and conducts analysis of power generation equipment to monitor and maintain equipment efficiencies; monitors emissions, exhaust temperatures, backflow and related operation functions.

    Submits O&M and capital budgets for approval. Maintains approved O&M and capital budgets for the turbine plant and auxiliary systems of the generation plant.
    Prepares and submits all required state and federal reports for the generation plant.

    Directs general technical analysis of generation plant operations as needed to anticipate and prevent operating problems; makes recommendations for generation equipment specifications and manages research and development sites in cooperation with vendors; assures proper maintenance procedures are followed to uphold equipment warranty and extend life of equipment.

    Directs or performs scheduled maintenance or repair of generation engines and equipment; generators, switchgear, governors, turbines, compressors, heating and cooling systems, oil pumps, oilers, meters, gauges, belts, monitors air/fuel ratios; tunes and adjusts equipment as needed; checks engine faults and overall engine functions; verifies timing and checks combustion knock; sets programmable logic controller (PLC) to adjust engine operating specifications.

    Obtains, evaluates, and awards bids for contractors and professional consulting services to accomplish maintenance, installation, and rebuilds for turbine plant and associated services.

    Coordinates and tracks any required NERC/WECC generation equipment maintenance and testing.

    Ensures all operations and maintenance procedures are performed in accordance with City policy to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local electrical requirements.

    Coordinates compliance, monitoring, and testing of City-owned generation resources per Title V and Approval Order permit requirements. Coordinates reporting submittals to the EPA and the Utah Division of Air Quality.
    Performs related duties as required.
