    SES position(s) in the Office of General Counsel located in Tallahassee. Candidates may be considered for assignment to FDC offices in other cities.

    Salary Range:
    $72, $85,199.92 annually, depending on experience.

    SALARY WILL BE DETERMINED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CURRENT PAY POLICY.


    SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • This position will be responsible for providing legal opinions to agency policy heads and agency field staff concerning matters involving civil litigation, such as discovery issues, public records and records production issues, service and issuance of subpoenas and summonses, and other day-to-day legal issues.
    • Representing the Department of Corrections and its' officials before state and federal courts and administrative bodies.
    • The incumbent will be responsible for all matters related to such representation, including, but not limited to, reviewing evidence, researching the law, drafting pleadings and memoranda, conducting, and responding to discovery, preparing and interviewing witnesses, providing legal representation at the trial or hearing, writing appellate pleadings, and representing the agency at appellate oral arguments.
    • Attending mediation and settlement conferences.
    • Monitoring a large caseload of state and federal civil cases being handled by outside counsel, including but not limited to determining legal strategy, coordinating discovery/records production, and reviewing pleadings.
    • Reviewing departmental written materials for legal sufficiency.
    • Serving as legal advisor to department administrators regarding issues generated by employees, inmates, probationers, parolees and/or the public.
    • Reviewing, analyzing, and drafting proposed legislation.
    • Reviewing agency procedures.
    • The incumbent in this position gives legal advice regarding the public records law.
    • The General Counsel's office represents the Department, as garnishee, in garnishment proceedings.
    • This position will be responsible for handling assignments and matters which are legally complex and/or sensitive in nature.
    • The incumbent will be expected to render legal opinions concerning the application of state and federal statues and administrative rules.
    • Performance of other tasks as assigned by the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of legal terminology.
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of jurisprudence.
    • Knowledge of Florida laws and legal procedure.
    • Knowledge of civil law and procedure, including, but not limited to, civil rights and tort litigation.
    • Knowledge of court proceedings.
    • Knowledge of constitutional law, public records laws and the laws regarding the service and issuance of subpoenas.
    • Skill in writing and research.
    • Ability to communicate effectively.
    • Ability to research, summarize and provide advice on disparate legal issues as needs dictate.
    • Ability to clearly explain the facts of a case and the legal issues involved.
    • Ability to provide legal counsel.
    • Ability to manage and monitor a large caseload of both state and federal cases.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Please note, when submitting a college/university degree, if selected for this position official transcripts will be required.


    • Must be a member of the Florida Bar in good standing.
    • Must possess at least two (2) years of experience as an attorney.
    • Must have litigation experience

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Membership in the Florida Federal District Courts is preferred.
