    Job Summary:


    The Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine seeks applicants for a position as a Clinical Assistant or Associate in Small Animal Soft-Tissue and Oncologic Surgery.

    This position is open to surgeons wanting to focus on both soft-tissue and oncologic surgery or exclusively oncologic surgery.

    The successful candidate will make up a team of four surgeons providing soft-tissue and oncologic surgical care to patients within the UW Veterinary Care hospital.


    Responsibilities:
    This position will be the fourth member of the Soft-Tissue and Oncologic Surgery service.

    The members of this service will work together as a team to provide excellent patient care and service to our clients.

    The Soft-Tissue and Oncologic surgery service combined with the Orthopedic surgery service supports 5-6 small animal surgery residents and 1-2 surgical interns.

    The Soft-Tissue and Oncologic surgery service is typically staffed with one faculty member, one or two small animal surgery residents, one surgical intern, one rotating intern, and 2-6 fourth year veterinary students, and 2-3 dedicated veterinary technicians.

    Major responsibilities of this position are divided into clinical service, teaching (clinical and didactic), research, and service.

    Participation in emergency and after-hours clinic duty, didactic and laboratory teaching of veterinary students, and service to the department and school is shared amongst the members of the service.


    Clinical responsibilities:

    • Surgical management of soft-tissue and oncologic surgery cases presented to the UW Veterinary Care hospital.
    • Collaboration with other clinical services within the hospital as needed to provide excellent patient care (e.g. Emergency and Critical care, Orthopedics, Diagnostic imaging, Medical oncology, Radiation oncology, Cardiology, Internal medicine, Dermatology, Dentistry, Anesthesia, Special species, and Neurology).
    • Consultation with referring veterinarians regarding follow-up care for patients treated at UW Veterinary Care or for general advice on soft-tissue and oncologic surgery cases.

    Teaching responsibilities:

    • Teaching of preclinical veterinary students in various didactic and laboratory courses.
    • Clinical training of fourth year veterinary students when participating on the Soft-Tissue and Oncologic surgery service.
    • Clinical training of surgical and rotating interns when participating on the Soft-Tissue and Oncologic surgery service.
    • Clinical training and mentoring of surgical residents enrolled in the ACVS training program.
    • Consultation with referring veterinarians and providing continuing education at the local, regional, and national level.

    Research responsibilities:

    • Conduct research (e.g. basic science, clinical, or teaching related) and publish results of scholarly activities.
    • Establishment of intramural and extramural funding for research.

    Service responsibilities:

    • Participation in various administrative committees at the hospital, department, school, and campus level.
    • Participation in various professional organizations and outreach activities.

    The approximate allocation of responsibilities:
    40-50% in Clinical Practice weeks/year of clinic duty)

    10-15% Teaching lectures/year and 8-12 laboratories/year)

    10-35% in Research

    10-15% in Service

    DVM - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree


    Qualifications:


    American College of Veterinary Surgeons Board Certification or Board Eligibility with advanced training in soft -tissue and oncologic surgery at time of start date.

    We would also consider and individual with European College of Veterinary Surgeons Board Certification or eligibility at the time of start date.


    License/Certification:
    Required

    Wisconsin Veterinary License


    Must be eligible to obtain and maintain licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Wisconsin at the time of start date.

    It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

    Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
