    Job Purpose & Position Overview

    The purpose of this position is to perform complex pharmacy technician duties.

    Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities:
    • Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska's Human Resource Department core mission, vision, and values.
    • This position involves tasks related to the preparation and dispensing of medications and other pharmaceutical products that are supplied by pharmacy services. This includes both inpatient/in-house and outpatient duties.
    • The work is performed under the scrutiny of security cameras.
    • Performs the traditional technical processes entailed with filling outpatient prescriptions which includes but not limited to determining appropriate patient and number of medications including quantities. Technician utilizes the RPMS pharmacy package and Point of Sale package according to established guidelines. Technician utilizes pharmacy automation to prepare prescriptions by obtaining correct stock container, counting or pouring correct amount of medication, affixing the prescription label, and includes all appropriate paperwork for verification by a pharmacist.
    • Educates the patient about his/her medication regarding number of refills, labeling instructions, proper storage, and provides pre-printed medication information.
    • Consults with the pharmacist regarding any questions the patient may have.
    • Restocks the automated dispensing machines and performs daily maintenance functions. Verifies all stock is within use date and completes monthly reports for verification that outdates are checked and removed from working stock.
    • Assists patients as needed by taking medication refill requests, answering telephone and explaining pharmacy policies and procedures to patients when necessary.
    • Prepares sterile solutions in the pharmacy IV room. Reviews physician orders for intravenous solutions, checking with the pharmacist if discrepancies, such as incomplete or unusual orders are noted. Calculates and converts to proper weights and measures the amount of drug needed for the IV admixture. Prepares admixtures utilizing aseptic technique. Affixes labels to parental containers in accordance to guidelines for verifications by a pharmacist.
    • Provides medication replenishment for the automated pharmacy dispensing systems located in the facility. Runs daily operational and pharmacy reports to assure appropriate ward stock has been dispensed and delivered to each nursing unit. Performs routine maintenance on the automated dispensing systems.
    • Provides technical support for the automated dispensing cabinet system in the outpatient, inpatient and emergency room to nurses, and other types of hospital staff when questions or technical concerns arise.
    • Responsible for prepackaging a variety of unit-dose and pre-packaged medications, utilizing available prepackaging equipment. Complete labels will be printed which include all required information. Technicians will also train new pharmacy staff in this function if needed.
    • Inventories floor-stocked and pharmaceutical items in inpatient nursing areas, emergency room, and clinic areas. Replenishes stock as needed to maintain appropriate levels of stock in these areas. Checks expiration dates on stock to assure all floor-stocked items are within times allowed for usage.
    • Manufactures products requiring compounding such as oral solutions, and/or topicals for large batches to be used in stocking automated dispensing machines. Selects and measures the appropriate ingredients and mixes in a safe effective manner. Inspects the final product for accuracy and suitability; maintains records of the manufacturing process; labels the product appropriately; and supplies it for delivery.
    • Without direct supervision by a pharmacist, maintains pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed medications and supplies; placing orders; verifying receipt; removing outdated drugs.
    • Mixing and/or reconstituting oral and non-sterile external medications without a second review.
    • Requisitions office supplies and other supplies from the Property and Supply department as needed. Performs other types of clerical duties as needed.
    • Contributes to a team effort by accomplishing pharmacy related results as needed.
    • Receives and reviews the pharmacy prescription denial reports daily via electronic on-line billing system. Determines if prescription is billable and inputs data into the system accordingly. Works with various Pharmacy Benefits managers help desks to fix reject within specified time frames. This includes telephone calls and working with patient business office personnel along with registration to help rectify denial and ensure maximum reimbursement to the facility.
    • Requests and obtains prior authorization for various pharmaceuticals from insurance companies. Receives and completes forms and returns as needed for processing of collection.
    • Researches patient records, reconstructs incorrect or missing medical information required to prepare a valid insurance billing when data is incomplete.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications/Skills:
    • High School diploma required and 2+ years of experience; Associate's degree preferred, or combination of education and applicable experience.
    • This position requires specialized skills and knowledge to technical pharmaceutical work and a thorough knowledge of the routines and procedures of the pharmacy.
    • Requires knowledge of pharmacy software and ideally knowledge of Pyxis and Scriptpro automated systems.
    • Requires skill in the operation and care of numerous pharmacy equipment, counting and labeling machines, unit dose packager, typewriter, computer, pharmacy balance, laminar flow hood, Pyxis, & Scriptpro automated systems.
    • Requires adequate math skills to compute requested amounts of medications as well as accurate weighing and measuring of pharmaceuticals.
    • Requires knowledge of record-keeping systems used in the pharmacy for statistical reporting, medication use monitoring, for quality control monitoring, improving organizational improvement monitoring, for report and document filing, & for recording medication orders and receipts and for auditing pharmacy inventory to ensure accountability of the medications in the pharmacy.
    Training Requirements:
    • Must attend all department meetings and trainings as directed by supervisor.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Manual dexterity with cooperatively free range of motion of all extremities including neck, finger, hand, wrist, elbow, arm, shoulder, waist, legs, hip, knee joints, ankle, and feet is required.
    • Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment.
    • Normal to heavy work which includes the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
    • While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.

    Language Requirements:
    • Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.
    • Must be able to continually and effectively employ professional verbal and written communications skills.
