REPORTS TO: Principal and Athletics Director
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
WORK SCHEDULE: 190 days (additional days specific to sport)
DATE REVIEWED:
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Maintains an up-to-date, in-field certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission; salary and length of contract to be established by the Board of Education and the Superintendent.
The length of the contract shall be determined by the length of the athletic season as established by the Georgia High School Association, the DHS administration, and the City Schools of Decatur Board of Education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned. The job description listed is meant as a guideline and, in absence of specific direction, I understand that I must make reasonable decisions and must act on those decisions to ensure that Board guidelines are met.
Goals and Performance Responsibilities:
Goal A: To manage and supervise the assigned athletic program, grades 6-12
1. Assign duties and responsibilities to assistant coaches with approval for the Athletic Director.
2. Coordinate the issuance, care and inventory of equipment, supplies, and uniforms
3. Assist the Athletic Director in purchasing equipment, supplies, and uniforms for that particular sport
4. Assist the Athletic Director in developing the annual budget
5. Scheduling games and officials.
6. Supervise students at all times from the time practice/activity starts until students leave for home. At no time should students be without direct supervision of a coach.
7. Coordinate the security of all facilities used by the team and coaching staff.
8. Submit the following forms to the Athletic Director
a. Complete team roster forms
b. Complete awards, season records, inventory forms, and lost equipment forms immediately at the conclusion of the season
c. All other forms required by the Athletic Director
9. Ensure the proper completion of physical examination, insurance, and parental consent forms before a student participates.
10. Ensure proper completion of parental emergency release forms when the team is traveling
11. Complete GHSA rules clinics annually
12. Show respect for officials, press, opposing coaches, visiting teams, parents, fans, students, athletes, fellow coaches, teachers and administrators.
13. Be a leader among young student athletes as an athletic coach and as a classroom teacher.
14. Be responsible for security at all facilities used by team and coaching staff when custodians are not on duty.
15. Set up all scouting trips and meetings with coaches.
16. Perform any other duties or responsibilities related to the coaching staff when needed or directed by the Athletic Director or High School Principal.
Goal B: To establish an environment in which athletes can gain self- esteem and develop a positive self- image.
17. Be responsible for awards presentations made during the annual awards program, and incorporating total coaching staff.
18. Demonstrate an interest in the classroom efforts and off- season activities of student athletes.
19. Provide leadership that promotes positive attitudes and good sportsmanship.
20. Work with athletes in a fair, understanding, tolerant, sympathetic, and patient manner
21. Promote school and community interest in the sport by:
a. Appearing at school pep rallies
b. Holding preseason parent meeting
c. Attending booster club meetings.
d. Maintaining a pleasant and workable relationship with the news media e. Preparing public address announcements for in- school reading.
22. Notify all members of the team and policies, procedures, and training rules as they pertain to the team
23. Be responsible for the conduct of student athletes and other involved students at all times- practices, games, bus rides, other schools, etc.
24. Promote unity within the coaching staff and within the framework of the athletic department.
Goal C: To establish winning teams within the bounds of good sportsmanship.
25. Develop teamwork, morale, sportsmanship, courtesy, fair play, academic excellence and strict adherence to rules of training and conduct.
26. Promote the attitude among athletes and coaches that winning is important but is secondary to good sportsmanship and the overall welfare of the athlete.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid in-field service certificate required
EVALUATION: Performance of this job shall be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: To perform the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, or hear. Lifting up to 30 pounds may be required on an occasional basis.
