    Description

    Under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Nurse Extern provides basic nursing care to patients throughout an eight-week Nurse Externship Program.

    Nurse Externs are responsible for adhering to all standards of nursing care under the Missouri Nurse Practice Act. Nurse Externs are responsible and accountable for knowing and understanding Ozarks Healthcare#s Mission, Vision, Values, and Standards of Behavior. # By participating in the Nurse Externship Program, the Nurse Extern will# Gain confidence by improving hard and soft nursing skills Understand the role of nurses in an acute care setting Engage in the culture of Ozarks Healthcare Reduce RN onboarding time after graduation# Eligibility Completion of two semesters of nursing school B average or above # #


    • Compliance with Isolation Procedures.
    • Proper use and documentation of Patient Safety Precautions (i.e. side rails up, bed in low position, call light in reach, bed alarm on, and awareness of fall risk).
    • Perform Basic Hygiene Needs-complete/partial baths or showers, oral care, hair care, nail care, and back rubs.
    • Assist with admission and discharge process by obtaining and documenting vital signs/height/weight upon admission and orienting patient and family to environment.
    • Obtain and Record Temperature, Pulse, Respiration, Blood Pressure on all assigned patients per policy. Document all vital signs in EHR and report to nurse preceptor.
    • Perform pulse oximetry readings and reports Sp02 <92% to nurse preceptor and record in EHR.
    • Perform Finger Stick Blood Sugar as ordered, report to nurse preceptor any results <80 or >110, and record all results in EHR.
    • Measures intake and output amounts and record in EHR.
    • Apply and Refill ice packs, refills K-pad unit and humidifiers as directed by preceptor.
    • Measure and apply anti-embolism (TED) stockings.
    • Prepare and assist patient with sitz baths as ordered and document in EHR.
    • Collect specimens such as routine urine, clean catch urine, Foley specimens, sputum and/or stool, correctly label specimen at bedside and deliver them to proper department for analysis.
    • Perform telemetry placement and electrode changes: inform telemetry tech when patient is off telemetry for test/bathing/discharge.
    • Turn, Cough, and Deep Breathe post op patients every 2 hours as directed by nurse preceptor.
    • Maintain patient's proper body alignment and activity by turning non-ambulatory patients every 2 hours and documenting position changes in EHR.
    • Assist patient to chair or ambulate as ordered.
    • Assist patient with bed pan/urinal/bedside commode or up to the bathroom as needed.
    • Provide perineal/catheter, ostomy care.
    • Assist patient with meals/feeding as needed, correctly follow patient diet as ordered and document amount of food/drink in EHR.
    • Promptly report all changes in patient condition to nurse preceptor.
    • Clean patient room which includes: over bed tables, removing unnecessary equipment from room, and clean bedpans-urinals-bedside commodes.
    • Use the Nursing Process to stablish priority of care.
    • Take report on assigned group of patients from off going shift and give report to coming shift.
    • Phlebotomy and IV Catheter Insertions.
    • Monitor IV Fluids.
    • Basic Dressing Changes that require NO MEDS or OINTMENTS.
    • Foley Catheter Placement.
    • NasoGastric Tube Placement.
    • Administer Tube Feedings via Peg or NT Tube and flush per hospital policy.
    • Monitor patient receiving blood products for adverse reactions.
    • May update but not initiate the nursing assessment with RN co-signage. (Students are allowed to make notes on the interventions not chart progression the patient is making toward closing out the plan of care).
