    About the Job



    The Assistant Director works with the Director in leading and managing programs and projects that work to increase American Indian students' educational attainment and retention through orientation, secondary advising, coaching, skill building, and culturally relevant programming. This position works with colleagues to create a welcoming environment where American Indian cultures, histories, and lifeways are reflected, valued, honored, and students thrive. The Assistant Director works with the Director to coordinate and supervise daily operations of the American Indian Learning Resource Center while ensuring compliance with regulations and internal policies.

    Job duties include but are not limited to:

    • Assist, advise and educate admissions in their efforts to recruit American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students.
    • Advocate on behalf of AI/AN students to academic and co-curricular and service oriented units across UMD.
    • Build a more inclusive and reflective campus environment amongst University of Minnesota educational and co-curricular units on the Duluth campus.
    • Strengthen reciprocal connections with tribal nations/communities valuing cultures, histories, and lifeways.
    • Plan, develop, and lead the implementation of integrated programs and services to assist current AI/AN students in their success at UMD.
    • Oversees student records and class data for completion and accuracy.
    • Hires, trains, and evaluates the student workers who are employed within the American Indian Learning Resource Center.
    • Managing overall grant efforts for the Minnesota Indian Teacher Training Program (MITTP) and student retention activities.
    • Prepare financial documents, process financial transactions, and track purchases/spending, as needed, under the direction of the AILRC Director.
    • Assess student strengths and needs to support, counsel, and advise regarding goal-setting, addressing academic concerns, and making informed educational decisions.
    • Assist students in transition to a post-secondary setting by providing personal support, information regarding university and academic program systems and policies, and referral to campus, community, and traditional AI/AN resources.
    • Contribute to student, staff, office, community listserv and AILRC website/social media accounts.
    • Participate in scholarship and award committees and selection processes.

    The minimum compensation for this position is $54,500 annually. Final compensation will be determined based on the candidate's education, experience, etc.

    This is primarily an on-site position with some flexibility for remote work.

    Qualifications



    Required Qualifications:

    • BA/BS degree from an accredited University, with at least 4 years of relevant professional experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience.
    • Knowledge of tribal sovereignty and self-governance.
    • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusivity and engagement with diverse populations.
    • Ability to travel within the Duluth area and to other regional locations. A valid Driver's License is required.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Masters degree in American Indian studies, Student Affairs, Education, or related field.
    • Two or more years of experience counseling/advising AI/AN students in higher education.
    • Knowledge and experience with college programs, higher education systems, policies and procedures.
    • Cultural knowledge, competence, and experience to make informed decisions about American Indian and Alaska Native student support needs.
    • Experience with and knowledge about programs supporting AI/AN college success.
    • Training in college educational success and retention strategies for historically marginalized populations.
    • Experience writing and managing grants.
    • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
    • Strong problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to support diverse American Indian students across the broad spectrum of identities including traditional and contemporary practices
    • Experience collaborating and consulting with tribal communities.
    • Experience working with historically marginalized populations (i.e. American Indian populations, first generation students, families from low-income backgrounds, students of color, rural populations, people with disabilities, and/or individuals from other underserved backgrounds).
    • Demonstrated ability to learn and disseminate detailed information using a high level of interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively, and under supervision.
    • Commitment to American Indian language and cultural revitalization

    About the Department



    The American Indian Learning Resource Center (AILRC) is housed in the College of Education and Human Services Professions (CEHSP). The center exists to support American Indian & Alaska Native students as they take charge of their educational experience and succeed in their college journey. Through its activities, the AILRC also enriches the Cultural, Academic, and Social environment of the UMD campus. The AILRC offers campus-wide student support services to students which include: Secondary Advising, Scholarship opportunities, ITSS computer labs, Work Study employment, cultural programming and student leadership opportunities. The AILRC has been a welcoming place for the AI/AN and non-indigenous students, staff, faculty and community members for over 40+ years. UMD has approximately 259 AI/AN students both undergrad and grad and offers a variety of American Indian related majors and programs for students to explore, as well as an Indigenous Student Organization for students to become involved with to build community at UMD.
