Job Description and Duties
The Psychiatric Technician (Safety) will be guided by the Unit Supervisor, RN Shift Lead, Senior Psychiatric Technician, or Health Services Specialist depending on the shift/program at the Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero (ASH). Responsibilities include but not limited to:
• Assisting in maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment for patients or inmates.
• Applying mental health principles and establishing secure relationships with patients or inmates.
• Overseeing patient activities.
• Performing custody tasks, including supervising patient activities.
• Conducting security measures such as shakedowns, searching for prohibited items, and inspecting facilities for security breaches that could facilitate patient or inmate escapes.
• Monitoring and intervening in patient behavior that poses risks to individuals or property, or indicates potential escape attempts.
• Demonstrating proficiency in the prevention and management of assaultive behavior, which involves patient containment, heavy lifting, applying restraints, responding to emergencies, administering medications, observing patient conditions, and reporting changes to supervisors or physicians.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Hold a valid Psychiatric Technician license issued by the BVNPTE AND must be a retired state civil service employee.
Working Conditions
Expect 12-hour shifts and other alternate schedules based on staffing needs. A maximum of 960 hours per Fiscal Year. This is a limited-term position (12 months) that may be extended or terminated at any time. Multiple vacancies available, positions may be assigned to various shifts and programs.

Applicants must have retired from State Civil Service to qualify for this role.
Applicants MUST possess a valid California Psychiatric Technician license and MUST provide their license number on the application form.
Only individuals with a clean Psychiatric Technician license will be considered for an interview.
