We are seeking a highly motivated Staff Scientist with expertise in biomedical data science, database creation and management, requirements engineering and team science. The successful candidate will lead projects that create new data management capabilities to support the broad range of biomedical research activities at the Arkansas Children's Research Institute(ACRI). This individual will work closely with Dr. Fred Prior (Chief, Division of Biomedical Research Informatics at ACRI) and Chair, Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). This role offers the opportunity to engage in innovative research in advanced database architectures and semantic integration technologies applied to multi-omics, nutrition and neuroimaging data focused on child health while working closely with research scientists, students, and the ACRI informatics team. The ideal candidate will hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field and demonstrate strong expertise in biomedical data science and database technologies. Proficiency in appropriate programing languages such as Python, SQL, SPARQL, along with experience using shell environments in Linux is required. Entirely remote work arrangements (including for applicants residing outside of Arkansas) will be considered for qualified applicants, with regular communication, mentorship, and collaboration via teleconferencing. Periodic travel for scientific meetings or team retreats and ACRI group meetings will be required.Time will be set aside, and the ideal candidate will be mentored by Dr. Prior to develop their own independent research program leading to extramural funding and publication to advance the candidates career.
This position is both an opportunity for advanced team science research in biomedical data management as well as the design and implementation of real-world operational systems to facilitate biomedical research focused on child health.
Additional Information:
Requirements gathering and analysis working with the ACRI research community to identify and assess needs will represent 25% of the effort. The core effort (50%) will be the development of new data management and data integration capabilities with a focus on novel architecture, FAIR compliance and end-user satisfaction. The remaining 25% effort will be dedicated to the applicants own research program that will hopefully grow out of their prior experience and new collaborations at ACRI. The successful applicant will participate in regular project and ACRI research meetings. They will work with a team of informaticists, IT personnel and students to produce documentation on design and standard operating procedures.

Description
1. Works independently as part of a research project/program.
2. Under the direction of the Investigator, writes detailed protocols for the conduct of research and contributes to the design, interpretation and final writing of research publications.
3. Analyzes and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within the scope of work and in relation to the general research program. Prepares written reports on phases of laboratory work involved in research projects.
4. Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by reading current research literature, abstracting scientific articles of value in the prosecution of research problems, and attending and presenting at scientific meetings, seminars and research conferences.
5. Gathers research materials, supplies, equipment and apparatus. Coordinates service support: repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies and research materials. Selects procedures for data collection and handling; develops or utilizes computer programs for conversions and statistical analysis of data.
6. Participates in the training of research support staff, fellows, and students. Conducts initial training as well as continuous skill development of staff/trainees in laboratory techniques and instrumentation procedures, as needed. Counsels staff/trainees on minor technical problems; may advise and assist staff/trainees with special research projects. Manages research expenditures.
7. Assists in proposal development and in facilitating new directions for the lab. Works with PI to develop plans for personnel and resources. Performs procedures to ensure experimental validity and keeps appropriate records.
8. Other duties as assigned.
