    Job Summary

    Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks an Electrician to join its Facilities team. Our electrician ensures a safe and functional campus by performing a wide variety of complex work covering all phases of electrical maintenance, renovations, and new construction with minimum supervision.

    The Facilities team supports RISD's mission by maintaining a safe and sustainable campus through planning, construction services, building operations, careful management of resources, and respectful personal interaction with the entire RISD community.     This is a full-time position with excellent benefits. This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement between Rhode Island School of Design and the Rhode Island School of Design Facilities Trades Association.

    Essential Functions
    • Responsible for the repair, cycle maintenance, installation, and replacement of electrical and fire alarm equipment using hand tools and testing instruments. This includes, but is not limited to faulty switches, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems: isolated ground systems for computers and software and safety systems for machinery.
    • Troubleshoot problems with fire alarm system, board, and device wiring related to all fire alarm systems.
    • Maintains a working electrical knowledge of HVAC and plumbing equipment to make minor repairs and adjustments.
    • Tests and maintains emergency generator systems to provide power to critical life safety systems such as Public Safety communications, egress lighting, Campus internet, and Dining functions.
    • Completes assigned work orders, entering hours and materials. Identifies and secures services of external contractors, as required, overseeing quality of work and successful completion of service.
    • Adheres to code requirements pertaining to National Electrical Code/NFPA.
    • Provides care and maintenance for tools, machinery and materials necessary for assignment.
    • Identifies, recommends, and with the approval of the Lead Electrician or designee, purchases equipment, tools, and supplies needed to complete work orders.
    • Reads and interprets schematics and motor control diagrams. Interprets diagrams. Plans schematics, drawings, and manufacturers' programing for fire alarms
    • Ensures rules for safety and security, including OSHA regulations, are observed and practiced and recommend changes to the supervisor as may be appropriate.
    • Installs and bends electrical metallic tubing.
    • Drives RISD vehicles to transport materials and staff to the job site(s), possibly outside normal business hours.
    Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience
    • Electrical metallic tubing installation and bending skills and ability to read schematics and motor control diagrams.
    • Ability to service a wide variety of machines and equipment of varying complexity.
    • Ability to work well in a high volume environment with rapidly changing needs and priorities.
    • Strong customer service orientation and ability to work effectively both independently and in a team setting with internal and external constituents. Commitment to centering inclusivity, diversity and equity in executing key responsibilities.
    • Knowledge of OSHA and safety best practices.
    • Basic computer skills required, including the use of software programs such as Word, Excel, Workday, TMA systems or equivalent and associated trade specific software.
    • Valid driver's license.
    • Ability to continue relevant job-related training and remain knowledgeable and ensure compliance with related industry codes and standards.
    • High school diploma or trade school, or equivalent combination required.
    • 5-10 years of electrical experience in the maintenance field with knowledge and understanding of high voltage and low voltage distribution systems.
    • RI State Master's License, Successful and continued enrollment in the State mandated training program pertaining to the NEC.
    • RI State Journeyman's License
    • RI Telecom System Contract Data, Video, Telephone, and Sound License (Class A )
    Preferred but not required skills and experience:
    • OSHA 10 certificate preferred
    • Prior experience working on equipment used in art and design studios

    Work Schedule:

    Full time. 40 hours per week, on-call, occasionally needed to work evenings and/or weekends. The person holding this position must be available for a 24-hour emergency call back. This position is considered essential and emergency personnel and is required to report to work regardless of conditions. Overtime required.
