    Description

    of Specialty Practice. Advanced foundational knowledge and skill-based instruction will be delivered via one-on-one clinical mentoring on an average of 3 hours/week. Ten hours per week will focus on didactic coursework and teaching opportunities at Belmont University's Department of Physical Therapy in the Pediatric content areas of entry level DPT students, as a fellow in the LEND program, and in the design and completion of a clinical project. In addition, the resident will have the opportunity to participate in several specialty clinics, including Seating and Mobility, Spina Bifida, Neonatal Follow up clinic, Spasticity management, Rheumatology, DMD clinic, CF clinic, Hematology Clinic, Brachial Plexus Injury and Down syndrome clinics. The resident will attend in the Advanced Clinical Practice in Pediatrics Course, APPTAC or similar conference, Pediatric Residency SIG consortium and one other physical therapy continuing education course in an area of related interest. Tuition up to $1000 will be paid for these educational experiences; however, the resident is responsible for all other travel expenses. Hours may vary between 7:00am - 7:00pm Monday-Friday. Weekend hours may be required during acute care stages of the residency.

    Key Responsibilities: Pediatric Rehabilitation at MCJCHV spans settings of acute care, outpatient, multidisciplinary clinics and preschool services. Observation experiences will be experienced in inpatient rehabilitation setting, VUMC burn unit, aquatic therapy, Vanderbilt Home Health and Metro Davidson County school system. The resident will also act as a lab assistant in the Belmont University DPT program. In all environments the resident will be expected to:

    -Demonstrate compliance with VUMC and MCJCHV policies/ procedures

    -Work as a physical therapist team member at MCJCHV with colleagues in occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, physicians, durable medical equipment providers, educators, case managers and social work

    -Apply a broad range of knowledge and skills to provide patient management in a timely manner that meets quality and compliance standards.

    -Complete all assignments in a timely and satisfactory manner including but not limited to: new diagnosis forms, Weekly ICF forms, journal club, and in-service preparation.

    -Track patient diagnoses and mentoring hours on the Patient tracking form.

    -Complete evaluations of all mentors

    -Attend all components of the training program including lectures, labs, clinical practice, LEND assignments and examinations. Excused absence is one that is related to illness, death, birth, accidents or extraordinary circumstances. Residents are required to make-up any missed assignments.

    -Participate in regularly scheduled MCJCHV team meetings, in-services, and journal clubs.

    -Lead MCJCHV Pediatric Rehab team in two journal club discussions with input from clinical mentors for article selection

    -Participate in APTA Pediatric Residency SIG Journal Club quarterly and lead once.

    -Prepare and present one in-service of relevance to MCJCHV Pediatric Rehabilitation team per quarter with input from clinical mentors.

    -Assist with teaching of pediatric physical therapy lab sections at Belmont University as a lab assistant

    -Provide 2 lectures to the Belmont DPT Students at discretion of Residency Program Coordinator

    -Attend all LEND meeting and lectures and complete selected LEND projects and assignments

    -Meet with the Program Director monthly to review progress toward residency goals, completed assignments and medical conditions/clinical experiences and areas of concern.

    -Meet with the residency director, program coordinator and primary clinical mentors quarterly for evaluation and demonstrate performance that meets criteria for passing. Quarterly evaluation criteria for passing: For quarterly evaluation 1, all observed criteria must be at or above a "3". For quarterly evaluation 2, all observed criteria must be at or above a "3" with 50% criteria at a "4" or above. For quarterly evaluation 3, all observed criteria must be at or above a "4" with 50% criteria at a "5". For quarterly evaluation 4, all observed criteria must be at or above a "4" scoring no more than 25% at a "4" and the remaining 75% criteria must be at a "5" or above.

    -Complete a minimum of 2 live patient evaluations which will be evaluated by the Primary Clinical Mentor, Program Director and Program coordinator/ Academic Residency Director with passing scores. Scoring criteria for passing the LPE are as follows: For live patient exam 1, all criteria must be at or above a "3" and overall average must be "4". For live patient exam 2, all criteria must be at or above a "4" and 75% must be at a "5".

    -Meet monthly with the Program Coordinator to discuss progress toward successful completion of didactic coursework and to update the curriculum map. The curriculum map is used to track the resident's progress throughout the residency year toward didactic goals and objectives.

    -Successfully pass two written examinations: one at the halfway point of the residency (February) and the other at the completion of the residency. The final examination will be comprehensive. Examinations will be created by Program Director and Program Coordinator with input from the residency clinical mentors. Benchmarks for passing these exams: Resident will achieve a score of 80% or better on both mid-term and final written examinations

    -Demonstrate achievement of all residency goals established during the orientation period

    -Complete a final evaluation of the program during the last month of the residency program.

    -Complete 1 and 5 year follow up surveys.

    Technical Capabilities:

    Rehabilitation Patient Evaluation: Demonstrates proficiency in evaluating patients with physical impairments, developmental disabilities, functional limitations, disabilities, or changes in physical function by obtaining information pertinent to the assessment and administering and scoring standardized tests and objective measures of deficit areas. Selects appropriate measures and performs a functional assessment to document patient's status requiring skilled therapy. Interprets the results of the assessment and their significance to the patient, family, referring physician and other members of the health care team.

    Treatment Planning & Goal Setting: Demonstrates proficiency in developing a plan of care that incorporates treatment interventions focused on meeting objective goals. Develops and documents patient focused short and long term goals that are functional and measurable. Identifies the need for and referral to other services, as needed.

    Treatment Implementation: Demonstrates proficiency in providing treatment consistent with physician prescription and established plan of care. Able to modify treatment plan as needed to demonstrate provision of skilled therapy services including progression of treatment throughout course of care, and revision of treatment interventions of goals not met. May supervise and direct certified athletic trainers (PT only), physical therapist / occupational therapist assistants, technicians and volunteers and students. Selects and follows correct protocol for care and utilize evidence-based treatments.

    Rehabilitation Patient Documentation: Demonstrates proficiency in documentation practices. Documents in the appropriate templates and utilizes only approved abbreviations within patient documentation. Meets institutional standards for quality and timeliness of documentation.

    Physical/Occupational Therapist Patient Education: Demonstrates proficiency in communicating functional impact of assessment findings, treatment interventions, treatment planning diagnosis, and disease process. Considers the communication needs/level of understanding of audience and may share appropriate information/literature.

    Basic Qualifications:

    Minimum Education: This position requires a degree in physical therapy from an accredited physical therapy program

    Minimum Experience: None required. The ideal candidate will have a strong professional interest in pediatric rehabilitation and a desire to become a Pediatric Clinical Specialist.

    Licensure: Licensed Physical Therapist through the State of Tennessee
