    Welder Job Purpose: Responsible for the efficient inspection, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair of locomotive car body, sub-structure, and various components in order to keep locomotives operating at peak performance and to ensure conformance to required FRA, company, and customer specifications. Also correcting vehicle deficiencies; adjusting and alignments; keeping records.
    Required experience: At least 4 years welding experience.
    Locomotive Welder Job Duties:
    • Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostics, identifying worn and damaged parts.
    • Measuring and cutting materials to specifications.
    • Welding materials using the correct materials to join the metals together.
    • Checking finished work to make sure that it falls within the tolerances.
    • Knowledge of metallurgy.
    • Knowledge of various welding techniques, including TIG, MIG, arc, and oxy-fuel welding.
    • Knowledge of manual and mechanical welding techniques.
    • Keeps equipment and material available for use.
    • Must perform required inspections, troubleshooting and analysis to ensure that equipment conforms to specifications and operates properly.
    • Completes inspection and repair reports according to company and FRA specifications and guidelines.
    • Following general safety rules, ensure proper operation and compliance with required federal and company specifications. Regularly examines parts such as car body, flooring, sub-structures, battery boxes etc.., and replace defective metals as needed.
    • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics, making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
    • Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
    • Maintains locomotive appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
    • Maintains locomotive records by annotating services and repairs. Notes all defects and repairs according to FRA and company specifications and guidelines.
    • Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
    • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
    • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
    • Enhances maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
    • Performs physical work to include climbing, heavy lifting up to 75 Lbs., and carrying
