- Bachelor's Degree required and at least 10 years of related experience, including two years of demonstrated experience managing a front line fundraising staff.
- Demonstrated track record in soliciting and closing six-and seven-figure gifts in a complex environment. Demonstrated ability to manage, mentor and lead a high performing team.
- Strong knowledge of MS Office and ability to learn new software quickly.
- Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
- Advanced understanding of fundraising needs, as well as a desire to learn more. Ability to work well in a busy office with competing demands; not easily flustered nor easily overwhelmed by a high volume of activity and projects.

- Builds, nurtures, motivates and mentors direct (and indirect) reports to achieve goals in support of Harvard Chan School's fundraising priorities. Establishes clear, well-communicated expectations on team goals and objectives and provides staff with frequent, constructive feedback, including interim and annual evaluations as appropriate. Develop and lead strategies for professional development.
- Work closely with team members to grow the prospect base and ensure productivity in identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts. Provide leadership, guidance and oversight of the team's strategic portfolio development and oversee a collaborative prospect assignment and portfolio review process.
- Actively partner and prioritize transparent and lasting relationships across Harvard Chan community through collaborating with faculty and other colleagues, including the Office of Communications, ORSD, Office of Financial Services.
- Manages a portfolio of 50-60 prospects in assigned regions and at various stages of their relationship. Travel is approximately 20% of the time. Develops appropriate cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategy to enhance retention, grow revenue, and improve donor advancement. Qualifies, progresses, and cultivates newly identified prospects and evaluates major gift potential and next steps. Manages research needs for assigned portfolio by completing research or by assigning research to the prospect management and research partner when appropriate. Will be required to meet annual individual revenue and moves management goals.
- Works with the Managing Director, Development, ODAR senior staff and colleagues to strategize and plan strategic development events and trips. Makes a minimum of 50 visits annually. Coordinates all aspects of development travel including prospect identification, scheduling, logistics, travel arrangements, event logistics, briefing, staffing and follow-up correspondence. As needed, utilizes email, digital, and phone outreach to meaningfully contact prospects outside of typical travel areas. Drafts contact reports.
- Staffs faculty or senior administrators in meetings with donors. Coordinates briefings and follow-up correspondence. Ensures that visits are appropriately memorialized and included in the official development database. Coordinates closely with faculty and administrators to provide guidance on and help implement fundraising strategy, recruit donors and board members, and raise funds.
- Works strategically with volunteers to encourage them to build bridges and utilize their networks to help Harvard Chan School develop stronger relationships with other prominent alumni and friends. Cultivates volunteers for future leadership roles on Harvard Chan boards, committees, and councils.
- Works with the ODAR development communications staff to ensure talking points are written for the Dean or other senior administrators for speaking engagements.
- Drafts gift proposals and other materials with support from development communications and donor relations staff as needed.
- Works closely with other Major Gift Officers, Alumni Relations, and other ODAR colleagues in the development of on-campus events and programs that will lead to increased high-level involvement of alumni, donors, and friends.
- The above covers the most significant responsibilities of this position. It does not, however, exclude other duties, the inclusion of which would be in conformity with the level of this position.
- Paid Time Off: 3-4 weeks of accrued vacation time per year (3 weeks for support staff and 4 weeks for administrative/professional staff), 12 accrued sick days per year, 12.5 holidays plus a Winter Recess in December/January, 3 personal days per year (prorated based on date of hire), and up to 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents who are primary care givers.

The Senior Director manages a team of 4 fundraisers, inclusive of the Director of Annual Campaigns and manages a portfolio of prospects, who can make gifts of $250,000 or upwards. As such duties and responsibilities are split between these two areas:

Job Summary
The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Office of Development and Alumni Relations (ODAR) is committed to securing the financial resources, time, and loyalty of alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations to promote the School's work of educating new generations of global health leaders and producing powerful ideas that can transform the lives of people everywhere.
Reporting to the Managing Director, Development (Managing Director), the Senior Director, Development (Senior Director) works within an entrepreneurial and dynamic School environment and closely collaborates with faculty, senior school administrators and University development colleagues to manage a team of 4 fundraisers, manage a portfolio of prospects who have the capacity to give $250,000 or more, secure funding for School priorities, and meet or exceed department revenue goals. The Senior Director is responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio of major gift prospects in assigned regions and academic departments. The incumbent will represent Harvard Chan School at events, meetings, and off-site presentations and will travel regularly to meet with prospects and donors.
This position will contribute to meeting and exceeding department revenue goals by managing 4 direct reports in their pursuit of their own fundraising targets established with the Managing Director. To that end, the Senior Director will meet with director reports to review performance, establish metrics, ensure that strategies are appropriate and lead to success and help direct reports adjust strategies when needed. In support of their own portfolio, the Senior Director will develop and prospect strategies, cultivating and stewarding prospects and donors and directly soliciting gifts; they will also establish goals and metrics for their own portfolio under the direction of the Managing Director. This position will also advise and work closely with faculty, leaders in School departments, centers and/or research programs to further their fundraising strategy in alignment with broad School priorities. The successful candidate will be a team player who collaborates freely and builds trust with donors, alumni, friends, and School partners, including but not limited to the Office of Communications, Office for Research Strategy and Development and the University Alumni Affairs and Development team.
