    SUMMARY

    SDMAC was founded in 2004 as a 501(c)(6) non-profit corporation with the mission to advance the partnership among the military, our elected officials and civic leaders, and the business community to enhance the understanding of the military's many contributions to the San Diego region. The President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is accountable to the Board of Directors of the Corporation for ensuring that the organization's mission and day to day operations are achieved. The President and CEO is responsible for developing and presenting the policies, programs and events to the membership and the San Diego community, building bridges between the region's diverse business, military, and defense communities, and fostering public/private partnerships to increase awareness of military/defense issues in the region. In addition, the President/CEO is a full-time employee of the corporation and is the public face of the organization.

    SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Engage in fiscally sound and sustainable business practices that attract strong, long-term support, both financial and intellectual, and effectively leverage local, regional, and national resources

    2. Maintain continuous awareness of policies and plans of the Department of Defense (DoD) as they impact the San Diego region, and develop and promulgate SDMAC's position on them to the SDMAC membership and other interested parties in the San Diego region

    3. Ensure cognizance of any legislation at the federal, state, and local levels that may impact the military and the defense industry in California and the San Diego region.     4. Lead SDMAC's annual effort to research and publish the Military Economic Impact Report (MEIR). Liaison with local universities and research organizations to ensure the report is relevant and highlights the critical importance of DoD to the local economy. Plan and coordinate the press conference and roll out of the MEIR

    5. Lead other research efforts aimed at producing economic impact reports for individual military and DoD activities in the San Diego region as may be directed by the Board of Directors

    6. Implement policies set by the Board of Directors (BoD) and governance of the By-Laws of the Council

    7. Lead administrative staff and program consultants in the development and implementation of short and long-range plans, policies, and other activities, including setting goals and objectives and performing annual performance reviews

    8. Manage all financial transactions and audits, to include establishing the annual budget to be approved by the BoD, monitoring expenses in concert with the budget, disbursement and collection of funds, and financial reporting to the BoD

    9. Prepare Board meeting agendas

    10. Administer the overall operation of SDMAC, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations of a 501(c)(6) organization in the state of California

    11. Assist the Board with establishing SDMAC's strategic vision and long term goals

    12. Initiate fund development strategies for organizational sustainability and program area development, with emphasis on increased fundraising and membership for SDMAC

    13. Author original content for correspondence, program development, web content, media communications/press releases, and position/white papers regarding legislative issues

    14. Correspond with Flag Officer, General Officer, Senior Executive Service, elected and appointed government officials and their staffs

    15. Develop and implement all marketing related materials, campaigns, and strategies to promote the awareness of SDMAC and its mission & objectives in local, state, and national arenas

    16. Act on behalf of SDMAC throughout the local community and state as a knowledgeable advocate for military, veterans, defense issues and community partnerships. Regularly attend meetings of other associations throughout the community and state

    17. Serve as the public face and interactive SDMAC liaison with other community organizations and the press during and after typical working hours, and act as the subject matter expert on military and defense related issues

    18. Serve as an ex officio member of all SDMAC committees

    19. Serve as a member of the Board of Directors for the SDMAC Foundation

    20. Assist in setting goals for and conducting negotiations with community partners

    21. Other duties as may be assigned by the Board of Directors (BoD)

    Position Qualifications:


    • Previous senior military experience highly desired


    • BS/BA plus 10 years of increasingly responsible (and successful) administrative experience including minimum 3 years in a leadership capacity


    • Skills in general and strategic business management, innovative and visionary planning, analysing, and decision making, effective leadership, communications, and customer relations


    • In depth knowledge of the defense industry and an on-going awareness of political landscape as it relates to military, veteran, and defense issues


    • Previous success obtaining sponsorships and/or conducting fund-raising activities and membership promotion


    • Existing strong alliances with political, military and defense leaders and viewed as a capable partner and advocate for the on-going advancement of the SDMAC mission & vision


    • Energetic and innovative leadership style with experience in effectively interacting with military and political officials as well as industry and academia


    • Strong finance, accounting, budgeting, tax, and banking knowledge

    o Highly developed analytical abilities with advanced computer skills utilizing spreadsheets

    o Technical skills and experience in financial reporting, analysis, and cash flow management

    o Knowledge of financial software systems and business modeling


    • Knowledge of marketing, social media tools: X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Blogs, LinkedIn, etc.


    • Ability to negotiate contracts


    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable making presentations and speaking in public including the media


    • Able to organize, and manage multiple competing priorities


    • Expert at problem analysis and resolution at both a strategic and functional level


    • Ability to research and summarize complex topics


    • Strategic planning skills with ability to think & forecast ahead


    • Strong computer literacy with MS Office, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint


    • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining strong customer/client/member relationships; identify and nurture community, industry, and partner relationships (e.g.,: Economic Development Corporation (EDC), CA Governor's Military Council, San Diego Chamber of Commerce, North County EDC, County of San Diego Veterans Council, Port of San Diego, San Diego Working Waterfront, CA Defense Communities Alliance, NDIA, CCOE).
