    Description

    Summary



    This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (YA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Richmond VA Medical Center (VAMC), in Engineering Service.

    The primary duties of this position involve maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related fixtures, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plastering, painting, and other related trades.

    Duties


    Carpentry


    The incumbent uses skilled techniques to construct, install, repair, and modify wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.

    Typical work assignments include constructing and repairing a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles, and items requiring limited decorative trim and molding.

    The incumbent lays out and installs various modular furniture assemblies. The incumbent sets up and operates a wide variety of wood working machines and tools.

    The incumbent assembles items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops.

    The incumbent uses wood, metal, and various composite materials when installing or replacing interior partitions, flooring (to include carpet, laminates, VCT and other industry standard types), panels, suspended ceilings, counter tops, and moldings.

    The incumbent interprets drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently, and determines the layout and work sequences and types of lumber or special related materials.

    The incumbent plans and carries out projects from initial layout to completion. Accuracy, spacing, fit, and structural soundness and finished appearance are essential.

    Plastering


    The work also involves mixing, application, and finishing of plaster surfaces in the construction and repair of interior walls and ceilings.

    The incumbent performs new plastering on all types of backgrounds such as metal, wood or gypsum lath, wallboard, and masonry surfaces, as well as repairs and patches plaster and stucco surfaces

    Masonry


    Work also involves the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block, and stone.

    The incumbent works from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders, and rough sketches.

    The incumbent plans and lays out the work to be done, selects the proper tools, determines materials to be used, and accomplishes the work in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices.

    The incumbent lays common and face brick, firebrick, cinder and cement block, glass block, terra cotta, and various artificial and natural stone in constructing and repairing such items as walls, walks, chimneys, fireplaces, manholes, boilers, and catch basins.

    The incumbent lays whole brick in straight, horizontal rows, corners, and more complex curvatures for structures that may include large planters, stairwells and architectural features.

    Painting


    The incumbent paints surfaces by patching, sanding, dusting, and applying paint by brush, spray, or roller to interior or exterior surfaces.

    Determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required to ensure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance, for example glossy finish, flat finish, grained effect, or a finish that must meet specified thickness.

    The incumbent prepares surfaces by hand and power sanding, sand blasting, wire brushing, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins.

    Mixes and applies pre-coating agents such as pickling and alkali compounds to remove scale, rust, dirt and old paint from surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly leveling dents and scars.

    The incumbent applies coating materials including paint, varnishes, shellacs, and special painting materials with any of the accepted trade devices including brushes, rollers, rollers with extension handles, airless spray guns including pole guns and graining devices designed to give special effects.

    Uses coating techniques that ensure surfaces are fully coated, protected and free from drips and runs. Installs, modifies and repairs doors, furniture and cabinetry such as; handles, knobs, hinges, locks, slides, etc.

    Performs other related duties as assigned.
