    Summary

    This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

    Duties

    The following Duties Include but are not limited to:
  • Assumes primary responsibility for computer testing and implementation of laboratory software programs as either an alpha or beta test sites on a national, VISN, or hospital wide basis.
  • Implements and maintains coding and mapping for laboratory test ordering, reporting, billing, and workload recording considering compliance principles.
  • Analyzes emerging trends, software and technology and adopts appropriate methods for local programs to meet laboratory and/or hospital goals.
  • Maintains current test menus, reference ranges and data entry of reference lab testing.
  • Serves as a member of the hospital ADPAC committee and VISN 19 ADPAC committee.
  • Assists IRM personnel in interfacing all laboratory instrumentation to provide a more rapid and reliable transfer of patient data from the instrument to the hospital computer system.
  • Maintains and updates the Laboratory System computer files on a continuing basis as situation and procedural changes require. Conducts periodic training classes for Laboratory Service and other Medical Center personnel who use the core lab system.
  • Writes and updates the Laboratory Computer Manual. Develops and implements procedures for computer-downtimes to prevent delays in treatment.
  • Assists laboratory staff in solving computer problems due to computer failure, power outages, instrument interfacing problems, etc.
  • Additional Duties
  • The incumbent is responsible for the overall operation of the CBOC Laboratory. Assures that all specimens are processed in a timely and efficient manner with a minimum number of errors.
  • The incumbent is responsible to independently exercise sound judgment using an advanced knowledge of medical technology in solving complex problems. The incumbent is given wide latitude for exercising independent judgment.
  • Establishes and monitors the quality of the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes as part of the overall laboratory quality management program and assures corrective action is initiated as needed.
  • Develops and updates technical policy and procedure manuals.
  • Provides technical guidance to technologist/technicians when quality control or instrument problems occur. Provides technical guidance to providers as needed.
  • Evaluates and implements the use of new methodologies and instrumentation in laboratory.
  • Develops and performs varied complex laboratory test/studies, using complex automated analytical instrumentation systems requiring precise measurements and equipment control adjustments.
  • Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and assay procedures; correlates quantitative data with patient data (., history, medications), to verify results; performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results; and recognizes abnormal results which require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly.
  • Responsible for the generation of the laboratory results into the laboratory computer system and for the editing and verification of the results recorded into the computer system.
  • Assures orientation of new employees.
  • Trains staff in the use of new procedures and instrumentation.
  • Assures that all standards of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) are always practiced and that the laboratory will qualify for accreditation.
  • . Implements the performance of CAP survey unknown specimen among technologist and enters results to CAP. Documents corrective action taken on out-of-range CAP survey results.
  • . Takes responsibility for the quality control and preventive maintenance programs, assures that appropriate records are maintained, and investigates complaints from the hospital staff concerning questionable results.
  • . Interacts with laboratory management to assist in managing laboratory goals and objectives.
  • . Assists laboratory management in budget, procurement, and equipment management. Maintains appropriate levels of supplies and reagents for the efficient operation of the section.
  • . Research, evaluate and prepare documentation for feasibility studies as technical advisors. . Ensures activities associated with process improvement, customer service, data driven decision making, or team driven change are accomplished.
