    Chief medical physicists Physicist is a member of the multidisciplinary Radiation Services team who works closely with the Department Manager and Service line Director to ensure policies and processes are in place. The Chief Physicists work in health care setting applying knowledge of physics to the development of use of medical radiation treatments, devices, and technologies. Physicists make sure the equipment is operating correctly and involved directly with a patient's treatment, as well with radiation safety and product development.

    Overview of Responsibilities

    • Oversees the medical physics department and the development of treatment plans for radiation oncology patients.
    • Prepares inverse and forward external beam and brachytherapy treatment plans, customized to each patient.
    • Presents proposals to Medical Director/Director, such as new devices, protocols, or designs of equipment, changes in treatment, planning, and research.
    • Performs and verifies equipment, dosage, film, and patient QA measurements.
    • Performs specification, acceptance testing, and commissioning of new equipment.
    • Calibrates planning, and therapeutic x-ray machines, and determines the distribution of radiation throughout the irradiated area. Transfers data into planning computers.
    • Monitors daily linac and simulator QA values obtained by the Radiation Therapists.
    • Arranges for external verification of dose values and calibration measures, such as annual TLD measurements, leak testing, calibration of radiation detection devices.
    • Assists the Radiation Oncologists in brachytherapy.
    • Consults with Radiation Oncologists per their request for special patient-specific treatment considerations.
    • The medical physicist will coordinate with the radiation oncologist, medical dosimetrist, and radiation therapy team to assure the accurate delivery of all aspects of a treatment prescription.
    • Develop, administers, and evaluate technical aspects of the radiation oncology quality assurance program to include daily, weekly, monthly, and annual performance tests according to national standards for all treatment modalities, localization procedures, and computational equipment and programs to assure patients receive prescription doses and dose distributions within acceptable degrees of accuracy.
    • Performs initial, weekly, and final chart checks to ensure safe and accurate delivery of treatment plans.
    • Ensure regulatory compliance with Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for all aspects of radiation delivery within radiation oncology.
    • Lead the application of physics and clinical engineering in the planning and development of new programmes, procedures, installations, and facilities.
    • Monitor the achievement of departmental objectives, developing and reviewing key performance indicators (KPIs) and reporting on progress.
    • Where required, participate in the selection, purchase, and commissioning of sophisticated diagnostic, therapeutic and biomedical equipment.
    • Advise management on the steps necessary for continuing professional development of Reid Health staff.

    Education/Experience


    Education Required: Master's degree in medical physics

    Education Preferred: If not board certified have a minimum completed a Campep approved medical physics residency program and /or board eligible.

    Experience Required: Minimum Years 2-3 years of experience in Radiation Oncology

    Experience Preferred: 3 years of experience in Radiation Oncology. Fully qualified in Therapeutic Medical Physics

    Licensure/

    Certifications: Board Certified or Board eligible in Therapeutic Medical Physics. Work towards NRC requirements as an Authorized Medical Physicist for the Radioactive Materials (RAM) permit for the High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy program.
