    Certified by Connecticut State Department of Education #66 Guidance Counselor


    REPORTS TO:
    Director of Pupil Personnel & Building Principal


    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
    The school guidance counselor assists the student in developing appropriate behaviors and social skills. They will intervene when the student is having academic difficulties. They receive direction from the building principal and function as a member of the staff.


    JOB GOAL:
    To assist the student in the development of appropriate social and academic skills.


    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The school guidance counselor's responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
    1. Screens students for special needs and manages the completion of referrals for potential special education candidates.

    2. Assesses difficulties of referred students, and, when appropriate, conducts individual, group, crisis, or facilitative interventions.

    3. Assists in the coordination of the standardized testing programs.

    4. Organizes orientation programs for new students or students changing buildings.

    5. Reviews records of incoming students and meets with new students to recommend an appropriate class placement.

    6. Contacts sending schools for information on transferring special education students.

    7. Reviews standardized group testing data and interprets individual student profiles to concerned persons.

    8. Provides consultative services to teachers and related school personnel in areas of curriculum management and behavior management techniques.

    9. Provides consultative services to students and their parents on matters relating to school achievement and behavior.

    10. Attends and participates in educational planning meetings for students.

    11. Participates in personnel development activities which lead to improved job performance.

    12. Demonstrates oral and written communication skills in an effective and responsible manner.

    13. Performs other assigned duties and responsibilities as directed by administration.

    14. Initiates referrals to other professionals or services as appropriate.

    15. Participates on the CST and accepts Case Management assignments.

    16. Provides career development activities.

    17. Participates in scheduling of classes.

    18. Maintains confidentiality with respect to students and their records.

    19. Other duties as assigned by the Principal.
