    Summary:


    The Special Services/Early Childhood Teacher for Deaf and Hard of Hearing is a certificated employee who is responsible for providing specialized academic instruction and deaf and hard of hearing services to students with established hearing impairment who require such services.

    Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Special Education of Preschool Programs, and the Elementary School Principal, the Special Services/Early Childhood Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides direct instruction, remediation, and assessment for students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing students enrolled in the preschool special day class, as well as to infant students and their families in their homes or group sessions scheduled at a District school or office location.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities;


    • Plan the remedial/instructional program for students who are identified as Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
    • Carry out regular classroom curriculum with emphasis on language disabilities and hearing impairments.
    • Provide specialized instruction to students to meet the goals and objectives as developed in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Individual Family Services Plan (IFSP).
    • Assess individual students to determine present levels of performance and determine goals and objectives in the IEP to meet the unique educational needs of students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
    • Monitor and troubleshoot the use of assistive listening devices.
    • Serve as case manager of the IEP or IFSP team.
    • Implement the IEP/IFSP with appropriate lesson plans, materials, and classroom strategies, and prepare IEP/IFSPs.
    • Use effective behavior management techniques to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
    • Prepare schedules and timelines to implement classroom activities.
    • Observe and make ongoing evaluations of students' academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, prepare progress reports, and communicate with parents on the individual student's progress.
    • Cooperate with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, behavior, and learning problems.
    • Appropriately mainstream students into integrated settings for maximum interaction with peers.
    • Create a functional and attractive environment for learning through room displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
    • Plan and coordinate the work of paraprofessionals in order to maximize student learning.
    • Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service educational activities.
    • Meet and confer with parents, staff members, and Assistant Director as to students' needs.
    • Assist when necessary in toileting, feeding, dressing, and loading in and out of the bus.
    • Adjust equipment, braces, and furniture as the need arises.
    • Take inventories and prepare orders for classroom aids and equipment.
    • Complete required educational forms.
    • Work collaboratively with Assistant Director and other IEP team members to foster student learning.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by Assistant Director or site Principal.
    • Maintain professional competence and credentialing status through participation in in-services and/or professional growth educational activities.
    • Travel within the District between school sites and as needed within Kern County.
    • Participate in specialty training to provide current, research-based support for the students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
    • Stay abreast of current assistive technology and its potential with the Deaf and Hard of the Hearing population.
    Qualifications


    Abilities:

    • Demonstrate a consistent and understanding attitude toward students.
    • Demonstrate ability to appropriately and positively manage student behaviors.
    • Ability to physically demonstrate and participate in assessment/activities with students, which could include kneeling, squatting, climbing, crawling, running, reaching, manipulating equipment used in adapted physical education, and lifting 50 lbs.
    • Must possess a private vehicle, valid California Driver's license and carry current automobile insurance with at least minimum coverage for public liability and property damage.
    • Knowledge of special education laws and mandates at the federal and state levels.
    • Ability to communicate effectively via oral, written or electronic means with educational staff, students, parents and administrators.
    • Perform yard duty supervision of students on recess and supervise students in other out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
    • Identify students' needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students with health, social/emotional, and learning problems.
    • Administer standardized tests in accordance with District requirements.

    Licenses and Certificates:

    • Credential: Appropriate California Special Education Credential(s).
    • Must possess a valid driver's license.
    • May require a valid First Aid/CPR card.

    Salary and Terms of Service:
    Salary will be according to the teacher's placement on the Certificated Salary Schedule. Work to coincide with regular teacher's calendar. Prepaid family dental, medical, and vision insurance plans are prorated according to the number of hours worked. Prepaid life insurance plan for employee only, prorated according to number of hours worked.
