    About the College/Unit/Department

    The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery comprises 48 faculty members, 53 clinical residents, 10 rotating interns, 7 specialty interns, and 3 administrative staff members.

    Shared laboratory space and technical support are provided within the Department, and 7 dedicated research technicians assist in the research missions of the Department's faculty.

    Other specialties within the Department include anesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, radiology, shelter medicine, soft tissue surgery, and zoological medicine, as well as a community practice program.

    The Department participates in the college-wide M.S. and Ph.
    D. programs.

    Department members also actively participate in highly successful collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus, including the College of Public Health, College of Engineering, Department of Nutrition, Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, and the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia.

    Additionally, there are external collaborations through organizations such as the Clinical and Translational Science Alliance, which includes The University of Georgia, Emory University, Georgia Tech University, and Morehouse University, and with other universities within and outside of the state of Georgia.

    The Department has a strong track record for teaching, research, and clinical service.


    The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people.
