    JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    We are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Designer to join our Mechanical and Electrical Design Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). In this role, you will utilize skill sets consisting of intermediate level abilities relative to concepts, practices, and procedures of Drafting and 3-D Modeling.

    You will:
    • Assist research engineering programs needing mechanical design support by collaborating with R&D engineers and engineering support specialists
    • Participate in meetings and design reviews
    • Collaborate to address design, material, and component needs; assist in the resolution of issues
    • Utilize accepted standards, methods, and techniques to create intermediate 3D solid models for fabricated parts, assemblies, and Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts
    • Create 2D detail drawings for intermediate fabrication parts/assemblies using accepted standards, methods, and techniques; may also create schematic/bills of material (BOM) documents
    • Perform Service Center tasks related to documentation control, copying, archiving (.stp and .x_t), and database entry
    • Utilize ARL's Project Lifecycle Management (PLM) software (Teamcenter) to properly archive and perform configuration management of all design documentation
    • Maintain all required compliance training related to business systems, safety, and security
    • Provide work status updates to senior personnel and engineering staff
    This position will be filled at multiple levels, depending upon the candidate's education and experience. Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher in a Drafting or related discipline and 1+ years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience and/or experience required for higher level positions.

    Required skills/experience areas include:
    • Basic/intermediate research utilizing CAD software
    • 3D solid models for fabricated parts and assemblies
    • Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) parts
    • Past success using 2D detail drawings for intermediate fabrication parts and assemblies using accepted standards, methods and techniques
    • Familiarity with schematic and bills of material (BOM) documents
    • Material selection, tolerance analysis, and/or manufacturing analysis
    • Documentation control, copying, filing, and database entry
    Preferred skills/experience areas include:
    • Siemens NX
    • ASME Y14.5
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe
    • Active government security clearance
    This position is required to be 100% on-site, but options may exist for a hybrid work from office/work from home scenario depending upon research requirements.
