    Head Coach

    The Supplemental Pay Schedule allows for various head coaching positions at each high school.

    To be eligible for a supplement for Head Coach, individuals are expected to meet the following qualifications:

    *Reports directly to athletic director

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities
    1. Instructs athletes in fundamental skills, training, and strategies necessary to achieve success
    2. Provides instruction and guidance that will lead to positive values, acceptable behavior, and self-discipline.
    3. Exhibits responsible conduct both in and out of the competitive arena.
    4. Maintains a copy of student records for sports such as physicals, insurance forms, concussion information receipt letters, and parent consent forms with the contracted athletic trainer.
    5. Promotes professional growth by encouraging coaching staff attendance at clinics and conferences.
    6. Assigns coaching staff specific duties, supervises these assignments, and completes evaluations of assistant coaches at the end of the season.
    7. Responsible for consistent positive information to the media, booster clubs, parents, and officials.
    8. Completes the State required concussion course prior to the start of the first practice and makes sure all coaching staff members have completed the course.
    9. Promotes wholesome sportsmanship among parents, players, and fans.
    10. Responsible for all equipment collections.
    11. Monitors athletic locker rooms before and after practice and competitions.
    12. Secures all doors and windows before leaving athletic facilities.
    13. Develops in each athlete a respect for school property.
    14. Attends annual VHSL coaching and official's clinics when necessary.
    15. Works with the AD to ensure that each student-athlete is progressing successfully in all academic areas.
    16. Organizes meetings with parents and the community before sport season begins.
    17. Contacts colleges and universities on behalf of athletes and provides candid appraisals of athletic and academic potential.
    18. Requires sound, acceptable coaching/teaching techniques.
         a. Uses sound and acceptable teaching practices.
         b. Runs well-organized practice sessions.
         c. Completes pre-season planning well in advance of the starting date.
         d. Adheres to highly efficient and technically sound programs of injury prevention.
         e. Constructs a well-organized game plan.
         f. Develops a system for equipment accountability.
         g. Keeps assistant coaches, student managers, and statisticians well informed about expectations.
         h. Cooperates fully with maintenance and transportation staff as well as others involved in the athletics program.
    19. Ensures that all athletes have transportation after games and practices, particularly away games.
    20. Provides for the safety of athletes, teaches skills necessary for competition, monitors adherence to school and athletic rules, and oversees student conduct at practices and competitions.
    21. Responsible for keeping practice periods for his/her sport within the confines of the time specified by the athletic director. Keeps the director informed of practice schedules during any holiday period.
    22. Meets with the AD at the end of the season to evaluate the program and make recommendations for improvement.
    23. Gives support to all endorsed activities of the school. Students will be polite, courteous, and fair to visiting teams.
    24. Responsible for every facet of discipline by modeling proper behavior. This includes attitudes toward school codes, training rules, rules of the game, ideals of good sportsmanship, and behavior of participants throughout the season. The coach represents Isle of Wight County Schools and the community that supports the school and Virginia High School League policies.
    25. The coach will supervise all students in their charge at all times and places and before and after activities of practices.
