    Description

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Responsible for reaching out to meet the behavioral healthcounseling needs of the people of the Northwest Arctic Borough and Point Hopeby providing individual, family and group therapy, substance abuse treatment makingreferrals appropriate referrals to other programs. Works in collaboration andprovides support and guidance to the Village Base Counselors and Case Managers.The Itinerant Therapist reports directly to the Counseling and RecoverySupervisor and or designee. Travels to assigned villages regularly to provideservices.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1.Providesindividual, family, group psychotherapy treatment, and substance abusetreatment. Adequately documents the treatment process and progress.

    2.Providescrisis intervention services and participates on the on-call rotation toprovide crisis intervention on a 24-hour per day basis.

    3.Makesclinical decisions regarding the welfare of patients, including suicideassessments.

    4.Travelsto assigned villages to provide mental health services on a regular basis.

    5.Performscourt commitment proceedings for patients who are a danger to themselves, adanger to others, or are gravely disabled.

    6.Providesassessments and consultations to medical staff, police, schools, and otherprofessionals and agencies as requested and when appropriate.

    7.Offerseducation regarding mental health issues to schools, other organizations, and communities.

    8.Providescase management, including making appropriate referrals to community agenciesand institutions.

    9.Escorts,or provides for escort services, for mentally ill patients requiring placementoutside the region.Continues to monitorpatients while in other placements or facilities.

    10.Worksas part of a team to provide optimal mental health services which may includemaking referrals to other Maniilaq and non-Maniilaq programs.

    11.Maintainsconfidentiality of patient records and treatment.

    Job Qualifications:

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Itinerant Therapist I:

    A Master's degree in Social Work, Professional Counseling, Psychology,or Family and Marital Therapy (or the like). Master's degrees must be an eligibleMaster's for an Alaska State licensure at the time of hire. If the candidatedoes not have a license eligible Master's degree but has obtained a Doctoraldegree that is eligible for an Alaska State Licensure, the Doctoral degree willbe accepted as equivalent. Must be able to obtain an LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or LAPwithin 2 years. Broad clinical experience. Ability to work with sensitivity in a cross-cultural environment. Ability to adjust to "bush" conditions inArctic Alaska. Must be willing and ableto travel frequently in small planes. **Please inquire if supervision is currentlyavailable**

    Itinerant Therapist II:

    Has met all minimum qualifications for Itinerant TherapistI. In addition has obtained at least aMaster's Level professional mental health license in Alaska. Examples of qualifying Master's levellicenses include Licensed Professional Counselor (under AS and Maritaland Family Therapy (under Other qualifying Master's level licensuresare (1) Licensure as a Psychological Associate or (2) Licensure as a Master ofSocial Work. Candidates with qualifyingMaster's level licensures will still be required to obtain their terminalLicensure (LAP, or LCSW) within two years. *Please inquire if supervision iscurrently available**

    All Itinerant Therapist are required to obtain a minimumof a CDC I (or national equivalent) in Alaska within 2 years of hire. Uponproof of certification therapist will receive compensation increase of 2 steps(if completed within the 2 year deadline).
