- Within the first 4 months of the training: Become proficient in the preoperative evaluation of adult cardiac surgical patients, the management of intensive care patients, and the management of post-operative problems in adult cardiothoracic surgery. The fellow should gain an understanding of pathologic conditions causing myocardial ischemia and requiring myocardial revascularization and cardiac valve dysfunction. The fellow should become proficient in performing cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass, decannulation after termination of cardiopulmonary bypass and closing of the incisions in patients undergoing cardiac surgical procedures.
- Months 4-8 of training: Develop increasing knowledge in the management of pre-operative, peri-operative and post-operative problems in cardiac surgical patients; Develop increasing proficiency in myocardial revascularization procedures including the performance of proximal and distal anastomoses and the performance of internal mammary artery anastomoses, both on and off pump; develop skills in the performance of reoperative sternotomy procedures; develop knowledge of indications, pre-operative management, peri-operative management and post-management problems in cardiac valvular disease and should begin to develop operative skills in this area.
- Months 8-12: Refine skills in adult myocardial revascularization procedures performing triple and quadruple bypass procedures in non-reoperative patients with facility; Become an expert in reoperative sternotomies, both opening and closing. Participate as first assistant in the most complex cardiac procedures including multiple valve procedures combined with myocardial revascularization; Become facile with valve operations performing both aortic and mitral replacement and mitral valve repair procedures; Participate in aortic replacement and repair procedures and should develop specific knowledge in this specialized area.
- The fellow is expected to participate in bimonthly cardiothoracic surgical rounds, and weekly didactic lectures covering the entire range of cardiothoracic surgery using the Thoracic Surgery Director's Association Comprehensive Cardiac Surgical Curriculum. Weekly cardiac surgical/cardiology conferences are held which are also mandatory for fellow attendance.

The goal of the fellowship is to provide specialized training in adult cardiac surgery beyond cardiothoracic surgery residency training. The Cardiothoracic Fellow will rotate at all Emory University Hospital campuses.
The Cardiothoracic Fellow will receive advanced training in and be responsible for the following knowledge areas and skills sets including, but not limited to:
The fellow has the opportunity for research activity and indeed is expected to conduct one clinical research project per year to be presented at the end of the year at the fellow/resident research day.
It is REQUIRED that all candidates possess the following credentials:
(1) Completion of an accredited cardiothoracic residency program;
(2) A current (or eligibility for) a Georgia medical license and DEA license;
(3) International candidates must have their H1B visa to be considered;
(4) USMLE Step 1-2;
(5) International medical graduates must have ECFMG Certification.
