    Schedule: Day shift Mon-Sat, Rotational few hours Sunday.

    The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) laboratory provides allergen specific IgE testing, diagnostic hematology, clinical chemistry, automated immunoassay, urinalysis, fecal analysis, and specialty ELISA testing on patient samples submitted from veterinary practices. The laboratory also supports Heska Research and Development through assay of samples used in the validation of point of care analyzers and tests, providing reference method analysis for method comparison studies.
    Technician I, VDL engages in all aspects of laboratory analysis of samples submitted to the VDL, including arrival of specimens, performance of analysis, including hematology, clinical chemistry,immunoassay,and parasitology.The technician will use hematology,chemistry,and immunoassay analyzers for analysis of patient samples and will perform routine maintenance and analyzer quality control procedures. The position also includes staining and evaluating blood smears microscopically. The technician performs immunoassay procedures using a variety of
    methodologies, including both automated methods as well as assays using multiwell plates and lateral flow methodologies. This position assists with method calibration and control of manual immunoassay methods.

    Essential duties:

    • Ensures patient and sample identification are appropriate during specimen arrival process and thatsample identification is maintained throughout assay procedures to reporting.
    • Performs hematology, clinical chemistry, immunoassay analysis on patient,validation,or proficiency samples.
    • Prepares accurate and timely laboratory reports.
    • Performs quality control and calibration procedures on all analyzers as indicated.
    • Performs analyzer maintenance as indicated.
    • Troubleshoots problems as they arise with assistance of other laboratory technicians and laboratory supervisor.
    • Ensures inventory of supplies is maintained in accordance with laboratory policy.
    • Quality Control and Document Management
    • Reviews quality control assay results and proficiency results and addresses problems with the assistance of other laboratory technicians and laboratory supervisor.
    • Assists in writing or updating laboratory procedures which detail current laboratory practices as directed by VDL supervisor.
    • Assists in analysis of validation sample for R&D department.
    • Conserves laboratory resources.
    • Laboratory Safety
    • Ensure safety procedures are followed throughout the laboratory.
    • Other duties as assigned
    Education/experience:
    • Associates degree in health science field and laboratory experience or aptitude
    • Veterinary technician certification with laboratory experience or aptitude
    Necessary skills and knowledge:
    • Ability to work weekends if required.
    • Ability to multi-task and manage a high work volume.
    • High level of attention to detail with strong organizational skills, analytical, problem solving, and communication skills, both written and verbal; especially good listening skills, and ability to convey andteach technical information concisely.
    • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and make recommendations.
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical information.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and customers.
    • Consistently displays a calm demeanor, empathy ,and professionalism, while maintaining a strong customer focus.
    • Able to work both independently and cooperatively with team members.
    • Ability and diligent willingness to enter and maintain accurate and thorough records isparamount.Intermediate ability with Microsoft Office Suite, Internet Software and E-mail required.
    • Familiarity with LIMS and CRM database software programs highly desired.
    • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and make recommendations based on history/presentation provided via phone and email.
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical information.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    • Requires prolonged sitting, some bending,stooping,and stretching.
    • Requires the ability to occasionallyliftupto 40 pounds.
    • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate laboratory equipment,including repetitive pipetting, and sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, photocopier, telephone,calculator,and other office equipment.
    • Requires eyesight correctable to 20/20 to read numbers, reports, laboratory equipment and othe rcomputer terminals.
    • Requires hearing within normal range for telephone use.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    • Typical laboratory environment.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
    • Regular and predictable attendance at the designated work site is required
