    As carpenter, this position performs general carpentry (alterations, construction, repair, replace and installations), painting and plastering in administrative offices, academic and auxiliary buildings and at the university farm.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    constructs and/or repairs building frameworks and structures—such as stairways, door frames, window frames, moldings, partitions, and rafters—made from wood and other materials; install/replace/paint cabinets, siding and drywall, walls and floors; follow blueprints and building plans; measure, cut, or shape wood, plastic, and other materials; inspect and replace damaged framework or other structures and fixtures.

    Primary Function of Organizational Unit:


    The Physical Plant is responsible for providing services relative to buildings and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, disposition of surplus property and moving and hauling.

    In addition the Physical Plants expanding responsibilities include providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University's mission, goals and objectives.

    Maintain, improve and expand all campus buildings, campus image and educational opportunities for all people.

    More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, landscape design, event planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair, motor pool and housekeeping services to 126 academic buildings, ten residences and seven farm buildings.

    Moreover, the Skilled Trades Department is responsible for repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance of campus facilities.

    Requirements:

    High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work
    Optional Guidelines:

    Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
    Preferred:


    A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school with a major in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking.

    1-6 years of progressive experience in maintenance, alteration and repair of buildings, or in the fabrication of a variety of wooden articles and equipment.

    Knowledge of the standard practices and methods of carpentry based on the NC State and Greensboro City building codes.
