Position Summary:
The HR Generalist is a key support role within the Human Resources department. The position is responsible for assisting with various tasks from other HR role functions, cross training to fill in for team members as needed, completing special projects, and supporting overall HR goals.
The HR Generalist ensures timely completion of tasks in personnel, payroll, training, benefits, recruitment, and administrative areas. They help maintain smooth operations and foster positive relationships with Fortune Bay Resort Casino and Bois Forte Development Corporation team members through employee engagement, data collection, reporting, and effective communication. The incumbent reinforces consistent application of policies and procedures across all HR functions.
Success in this role means: completing daily responsibilities accurately and on time, communicating effectively with team members, leadership, and frontline staff alike, demonstrating adaptability across multiple HR functions, and maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
The HR Generalist is responsible for the following duties:
Employee Engagement and Relations (25%)
- Coordinate and conduct employee feedback initiatives including exit and stay interviews, surveys, suggestions program, focus groups, and other input channels to produce KPI's and identify trends affecting morale, work environment, supervision, efficiency, motivation, and retention; work with the HR Administrative Assistant to analyze and summarize findings, trends, and recommendations in collaboration with the Personnel Manager.
- Collect, review, collaborate with leadership, and draft responses to monthly employee suggestions.
- Assist the Personnel Manager with Minnesota Unemployment; Gather information, prepare reports about related KPI's, scan, file, maintain, and track unemployment paperwork.
- Oversee the collection and dissemination of information about employee resources such as the EAP program, energy assistance, employee discounts, Bois Forte benefits, shoe discounts, LifeMart Discounts, and various other fringe benefits for employees.
Recruitment and Onboarding (20% (50% during the busy season))
- Assist daily with recruitment and onboarding, especially during peak seasons. This will include phone calls, reference and background checks, scheduling interviews, organizing paperwork, taking employee pictures, updating documents on ADP.
- Coordinate with the Personnel Manager and Recruitment and Onboarding Specialist to outline salary applicants for presentation to the hiring manager, schedule salary interviews, and prepare interview packets.
- Collaborate with the Recruitment and Onboarding Specialist and Marketing to facilitate components of recruitment campaigns such as making short videos, hosting events, and attending job fairs.
- Update job descriptions as directed.
- Periodically conduct interviews with department leadership.
Payroll & HRIS Support (20%)
- Assist the Payroll/HRIS Manager with entering tips and maintaining job/wage changes daily.
- Partner with the Bois Forte Tribal Government, 477 program, and other entities to make resources more pertinent, supportive, and accessible.
Training and Development (15%)
- Assist with the design and logistics of in-house employee trainings and development programs to increase performance and productivity, and addresses company needs based on data gathered, in cooperation with the Training Manager and Personnel Manager.
- Monitor, track, and report about training completion.
Administration (10%)
- Aggregate data, create charts, and visuals that are approachable to others.
- Draft a variety of administrative correspondence, including researching and writing a column for Fortune Bay's monthly newsletter regarding a topic chosen by the Human Resources team.
- Assist with filing progressive discipline and purging physical and digital files in accordance with file retention standards.
- Coordinate with Personnel Manager to track, audit, and summarize completion data regarding department schedules, progressive discipline for infractions, policy updates, training checklists, annual mandatory training attendance, and other leadership duties.
- Organize times, committee members, and witnesses, then assemble packets for appeal hearings.
General (5%)
- Attend weekly HR meeting to share insights, suggestions, and plans.
- Maintain awareness regarding employment and labor laws, such as FLSA, FMLA, Title VII, and ADA.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Events and Recognition (4%)
- Assist with organizing and facilitating employee events such as the holiday party, summer picnic, appreciation meals, employee fun days, etc.
- Assist with proposing, designing, and implementing effective recognition programs and incentives.
Safety (1%)
- Complete fire extinguisher checklists monthly and other inspections as assigned.

Qualifications – Education and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent and ability to write and communicate effectively.
- Three (3) years of Human Resources or related cumulative experience in multiple areas including: administrative, interpersonal, data presentation, training, risk management, and benefits related roles.
- Strong computer background with skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software programs; ability to gather, record, and analyze data and information and create reports and graphs.
- Ability to administer a broad range of tasks including directing concerns to the appropriate staff, objectively synthesizing data, active listening, and disseminating information.
- Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with staff.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to listen and respond to team member issues.
- Highly organized with attention to detail and the ability to set and meet deadlines.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and maintain a positive attitude while performing various tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Two (2) year associate's degree in human resources or related field.
- Relevant training/certifications/credentials (statistics, conflict resolution, employment law, etc.)
- Background and knowledge of the principles and practices of human resources management.
- General knowledge of employment laws and governmental compliance requirements.
- High level proficiency with Excel and ADP
- Experience in the hospitality and/or gaming industry.
Work Environment:
The work environment is fast-paced and requires overall good mental and physical health. The work environment related to this position can be tense and stressful.
Physical Demands:
