    Summary:


    The Lab Point of Care Coordinator is a lead position within the Clinical Laboratory that is responsible for the coordination of point of care testing.

    This support crosses multiple laboratory and clinic locations.

    Lab Point of Care Coordinator provides technical resources and daily direction to nurses, medical assistants, and other healthcare professionals with regard to laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.

    The Lab Point of Care Coordinator assures quality testing and accurate test performance through operator training, competency assessment, equipment monitoring, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, quality control review, and proficiency testing.

    Incumbents operate under general supervision.

    Reporting to the Supervisor, Manager and Medical Director of POCT Laboratory and in collaboration with Nursing Education and Quality, the incumbent uses his/her training and experience as a certified Medical Technologist in support of Point of Care testing performed by clinical staff across the organization.

    Responsible for developing and maintaining collaborative, mutually supportive work relationships with clinical staff, upholding high technical standards in a positive and respectful manner.


    Job Responsibilities:

    1) Provides technical oversight for Point of Care testing performed throughout BH Health to meet/exceed accreditation standards. Ensures that the test systems are properly functioning. Maintains, troubleshoots and takes corrective action with equipment as needed.

    2) Works with nursing, physicians, employees and management as needed to ensure Point of Care testing is running efficiently and effectively.

    3) Travel to each site at least semi-annually.

    4) Coordinate training assessments. Develop and maintain teaching/training materials.

    5) Coordinate competency assessment. Develop and maintain competency assessment materials.

    6) Participate in inspection readiness and tracer activities for appropriate regulatory and accreditation agencies.

    7) Write and maintain current procedure manual(s) in area(s) of expertise using an approved format. Assist with development, maintenance and control of laboratory policies and procedures.

    8) Provide leadership for the testing, interpretation and reporting of results.

    9 ) Review quality control for problem identification and troubleshooting. Use quality control statistics and control procedures such as comparison between methods and results from proficiency testing to identify and or correct performance problems. Coordinates the CAP Proficiency testing program.

    10 ) Develop and oversee validation/verification studies for new instruments, methods and tests.

    11 ) Responsible for staying current with new technologies and methodologies. Make recommendations to management or service team. Assist and advises clinical staff involved in training (train the trainer model).

    12 ) Assist with maintaining inventory and supplies for the Point of Care testing and purchasing functions (interact with purchasing, write specifications, call companies, research and evaluate products).

    13 ) Monitors IT system functionality including flow of results to patient records as well as billing. Monitors test and supply utilization.

    14 ) Communicate regularly with Managers to relay problems or concerns.

    15 ) Promotes culture of safety for patients through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.


    Required Work Experience:

    1) 5 years of laboratory experience


    Preferred Work Experience:

    1) Previous experience in Point of Care testing


    Skills and Competencies:

    1) Strong organizational skills with ability to work in a fast-paced environment independently or as part of a team.

    2 ) Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

    3 ) Working knowledge of the JC, CAP and CLIA regulations related to work area.

    4 ) High level computer skills required (Word, Excel, departmental LIS, etc).

    5 ) Ability to interact with and build alliances with clinical staff.
