- Working collaboratively within the Antenna Electronics Integrated Product Team (IPT) to design, model, analyze, cost, procure, prototype, test, and develop production plans for Front End receiver feeds, cryostats, and hardware.
- Documenting and presenting designs and implementations, including drafting, block diagrams, interface diagrams for Interface Control Documents, and materials for internal reviews and external presentations.
- Generating Autodesk CAD drawings and bills of material.
- Creating detailed piece part drawings that meet engineering and documentation standards.
- Ensuring proactive compliance with NRAO and government safety policies, standards, and procedures.
- Other duties may be assigned based on the applicant's skills and the Observatory's needs.
- You have a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field.
- While not required, you may have an advanced degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field.
- You have at least one year of experience as a mechanical engineer in RF Front-End receiver design. Experience with the creation, management, and delivery of different documentation is strongly preferred.
- Excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts, practices and procedures.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and multidisciplinary team environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Use of Autodesk Inventor for the creation of 3D mechanical design and documentation.
- Use of engineering design tools for FEA such as ANSYS
- Use of test equipment, such as vibration tables.

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) invites applications for a full-time Mechanical Engineer II position. The mechanical engineer will work with engineers and other technical staff on the design and documentation of Front-End feeds, module housings, electronic and mechanical assemblies for the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA). The ngVLA is a project to build a new array of 263 antennas that will span all of North America.
The position is initially available for a one-year term, with additional two one-year extensions contingent on available funding.
The position will be based in Socorro, NM.
What You will be Doing
The successful candidate will work both independently and within a dynamic multidisciplinary team environment to support ongoing design development for the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA). The job requires technical competence, attention to detail, collaboration, time management skills, and expert judgement.
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for:
Work is typically performed in a research or development environment, performed on a computer at a desk or at a lab bench for extended periods. May be required to lift and carry heavy lab equipment (up to 40 pounds) for relocation or installation, and to squat, kneel, or crawl to measure or access items. May be required to work at high altitudes, outdoors, or climb on precarious structures. Occasional travel (domestic and international) may be required.
Who Are You:
Must possess a valid driver's license as the engineer may be required to drive Observatory vehicles. An applicant must pass any applicable knowledge/skills assessments.
Safety Sensitive
The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen. Failure to pass the screen will disqualify the candidate from employment consideration for a period of six months from the date of the results.
