    The Inspection Development and Engineering is looking for a driven and dynamic Senior Engineer/Scientist interested in a challenging and rewarding career, specializing in advanced non-destructive testing and sensor development Work with a talented team and lead the development of non-destructive testing technologies for application at the laboratory, at vendors, and for shipboard inspections. A successful candidate must be able to work both independently or in a team environment, as well as be self-directing and highly detail oriented.

    You will be expected to readily complete a challenging certification program, apply advanced concepts to develop creative solutions using established and new technologies, influence team direction, and be cognizant of all phases of your work including planning, tracking, operations, safety, quality, and technical writing.

    Work in this area will focus on developing and applying novel non-destructive testing solutions to additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, structural health monitoring, automation, and robotics. Perform hands on laboratory development work and work with vendors. The successful candidate has the opportunity to complete necessary NDT certifications, qualify as a shipyard radiation worker, and travel to support shipboard inspection programs (Up to 5 percent travel).

    Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 6 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or PhD degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 1 year of relevant experience; or Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part I qualified; or EDO qualified and 2 years EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or 3 years SRE qualified and Water Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and Fuel and Barrier Shift Supervisor (ECF only); or SRE qualified and 6 years of experience.

    Preferred Skills
    • Certification or experience with Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Electromagnetic Testing (ET), Radiographic Testing (RT) or other non-destructive testing method.
    • Experience in the development and application of Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing techniques.
    • Experience with sensors, instrumentation, signal processing, and circuit analysis and design.
    • Familiarity with casting, forging, welding and joining material processes.
    • Knowledge of advanced manufacturing techniques including Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), Direct
    • Energy Deposition (DED), Powder Metallurgy-Hot Isostatic Pressing (PM-HIP).
    • Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Physics degrees preferred.

    Pay Range

    $92, $145,200.00 annually

    The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
